Itinerary

Day 1 Arrival in Trieste

Welcome to Italy and Trieste! If you arrive in good time, we recommend you to explore this beautiful coastal city, near the Croatian border.

Day 2 Cycling from Trieste to Buje - 46 km (58 km)

The day starts with a welcome briefing at 09:00. At the same time, those who have ordered bikes will be able to try them out and other equipment.
To avoid the traffic in Trieste, we suggest taking the ferry to Muggia. From here, the cycling tour takes you through a scenic area, through three countries (Italy, Slovenia and Croatia), each with its own unique charm. Whether you’re looking for stunning coastal views or picturesque villages, this route offers an unforgettable experience.
The first part of the day’s route runs along the coast, providing breathtaking views of the Adriatic Sea. The cycling then continues on the legendary Parenzana route, the former narrow-gauge railway line that winds its way deep into the Istrian peninsula. As you cross into Slovenia, the landscape becomes more rural and picturesque. Here, you can expect a smooth journey through charming villages and vineyards. Your journey ends near Buje, a town surrounded by rolling hills, olive groves and vineyards. Explore the historic town centre and treat yourself to local Istrian specialities like truffles and Malvasia wine.
46 km + 697 m – 558 m (58 km) + 708 m – 576

Day 3 Cycling around Buje - 48 km

Today’s ride starts with a gentle descent to the coast at the northernmost point of the Istrian peninsula. Here you can visit a lighthouse, which, according to legend, was built by Count Metternich as his love nest. Savudrija is one of the oldest lighthouses in the Adriatic, built in 1818, and it is also the northernmost lighthouse in Istria. The building is 36 metres high and a lighthouse keeper still lives inside it. The trail continues from here southwards to Umag. The history of the town is extremely interesting, as it was founded by a Roman nobleman who decided to make it his summer residence. The glamour, grandeur and splendour of those times can still be seen today in the Venetian houses of the old town. The city walls and fortifications are partly preserved, as well as some Renaissance and Baroque buildings and churches. The route then continues through a beautiful landscape of vineyards and olive groves back to your accommodation in the Buje area.
48 km + 443 m – 442 m

Day 4 Cycling from Buje to Motovun – 37 km

After breakfast, the cycling continues. During this stage, you’ll be surrounded by a beautiful landscape of terraced vineyards that resemble a picture on the front of a holiday guide to Tuscany. Along the way, you can stop at many fascinating viewpoints, such as the charming medieval town of Grožnjan, famous for its art galleries and stunning views of the mountain peaks. The cycle continues from Grožnjan, taking the scenic route through the Istrian countryside, with its rolling hills and picturesque landscapes.
Finally, you’ll arrive in Motovun, a picturesque hilltop town known for its medieval architecture and breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. Perched on top of a 277-metre hill, the town features narrow cobbled streets, old city walls and charming stone houses. The town is also famous for its truffles, making it a culinary hotspot, especially during the annual truffle festival.
37 km + 693 m – 585 m

Day 5 Cycling from Motuvun to Poreč – 40 km

Start your day by strolling around the historic city centre and enjoying the views before setting off. This part of the trail runs from the hinterland to the coast. Today’s trail goes first to Višnjan, where you will pass one of the 5 most famous observatories in the world. You will then continue to the town of Višnjan, which is located at an altitude of 246 metres, which has an incredibly beautiful view of the western coast of Istria and the coastal town of Poreč. In the area around Višnjan, it is possible to visit many wine cellars with wine from the Poreč area, especially Malvasia. After Višnjan, the cycling continues to Tar, a small town located on a hill above the sea. In this area you will also have the chance to visit Nova Vas and its famous Baredine cave.
The day’s cycling ends in the coastal town of Poreč, where you can visit the famous Euphrasian Basilica, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Take the opportunity to stroll along the seafront and enjoy a meal in one of the many restaurants in the old town.
40 km + 367 m – 614 m

Day 6 Cycling from Poreč to Rovinj – 66 km

You start the day by cycling along minor roads through small villages. Along the way you will pass vineyards, the towns of Sv. Lovreč and Kanfanar. The first stop of the day is the medieval small village of Svetvinčenat. Take your time here and discover the Morosini Grimani citadel castle with its tower, parish church, municipal loggia and a row of 16th century Renaissance-style houses and a town cistern in the centre. Svetvinčenat truly belongs to a line of the most beautiful Venetian creations of that period.
The cycling continues from here towards the small village of Bale. Here you can visit the Bembo Palace, the town square and various museums. From Bale, cycle on a mix of gravel and paved roads and paths along the coast until you reach Rovinj, the ‘Pearl of the Adriatic’, known for its picturesque old town and bustling harbour.
With its narrow cobbled streets, colourful Venetian buildings and lively promenade, Rovinj exudes a unique blend of history and Mediterranean charm. The town’s centrepiece is the church of St Euphemia, which offers stunning views from its bell tower. Rovinj is also known for its lively art scene, delicious seafood restaurants and beautiful beaches. The nearby islands and natural parks provide opportunities for further outdoor activities, making Rovinj a popular destination for both relaxation and adventure.
Overnight stay in Rovinj.
