Cycling from Bolzano to Venice, via Lake Garda and Verona

During this trip, you will travel on a magical cycling route where you will experience unique landscapes, a rich culture and the largest thermal area in Europe. You will cycle from the stunning Dolomites, which are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You’ll start by cycling along the river in the Adige Valley south towards Lake Garda, Verona, Vicenza and Venice. This cycling tour gives you the opportunity to experience the wonderful culture of this area, the fascinating architecture and the exciting history that has characterised the area. You will end the journey at the Venetian Lagoon, where Venice opens up and has been attracting passers-by for centuries, truly a place that you should visit at least once in your life.
The cycling is mostly on cycle paths and smaller roads with little traffic. About 90% on tarmac and 10% on gravel. It is quite flat with a few climbs. The longest distances are between Bolzano and Trento and from Verona to Vicenza, which can be shortened by train.

Itinerary

Day 1 Arrival in Bolzano

Bolzano has always been an important crossroad between the Mediterranean and Central Europe, and today it is an important commercial and tourist centre, beautifully situated at the foot of the Dolomites. Bolzano attracts many tourists every year with its charming centre of colourful houses in typical Tyrolean style.

Day 2 Cycling from Bolzano to Trento - 70 km

Today you’ll start by cycling along the Adige River, where you’ll pass both apple orchards and vineyards. When you get halfway to Trento, you will cross the border that represents the beginning of the Italian-speaking part of Italy and the end of the German-speaking part. Finally, you will reach the final destination of the day, Trento, which is a very beautiful city.

Day 3 Cycling from Trento to Desenzano/ Peschiera – 50 km

Today you continue to cycle along the Adige River towards Rovereto, famous for its museum of modern and contemporary art. After a short climb to the Passo di Giovanni, you’ll enjoy stunning views of Lake Garda and the small town of Torbole. Once in Riva del Garda, take the ferry to reach the southern part of Lake Garda, a real highlight.

Day 4 Cycling from Desenzano/ Peschiera to Verona – 60 km (35 km)

After cycling through the hilly landscape surrounding Lake Garda, you will once again follow the Adige River for the last stretch to Verona. Verona is one of the most important and beautiful cities in the Veneto region. There is a lot to do here, such as visiting the Church of San Zeno and the House of Juliet.

Day 5 Cycling from Verona to Vicenza – 75 km (40 km)

Today you will cycle in the countryside at the foot of the Mounts Lessini, where you will travel through a stunningly beautiful landscape, lined with vineyards. You will then continue towards the Berici hills and Vicenza. The old town centre is characterised by beautiful palaces and buildings designed by the famous Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio.
You can shorten the day’s journey by taking the train in San Bonifacio.

Day 6 Cycle from Vicenza to Padova thermal district - 50 km

Today you’ll leave Vicenza behind and cycle along the Bacchiglione River, admiring the Palladian masterpiece of Villa La Rotonda and the frescoes of Tiepolo, at Villa Valmarana. Next, you’ll head for the Euganean Hills, now you’ve entered Europe’s largest thermal area. Here you’ll have the chance to relax at a 4-star spa to recharge your batteries.

Day 7 Cycle from Padova thermal district to Mestre/Venice - 55 km

You’ll start the day by cycling along the Battaglia Canal, passing Padua, home to one of the oldest universities in Italy. Padova is a city rich in both art and history, so there is much to discover. You will then continue along the Piovego Canal, which will take you towards Stra and the Brenta Canal. You will cycle through an area that was important to the Venetian nobility. Finally, you will reach Mestre, the last stop on the mainland before reaching Venice and the final destination of the trip. You will stay in Mestre, located just outside Venice, and then visit Venice with a short journey (about 15-20 min by public transport).
