Itinerary

8 days/ 7 nights

Day 1 Arrival in Brasov

Arrival in Brasov. After arrival, spend the rest of the day and evening exploring the city.

Day 2 Cycle from Brasov to Miclosoara - 50 km

After breakfast, leave Brasov and take the northern road towards Bod. From there, follow a minor road that stretches 23 km through San Petru, Bod, Feldioara (also known as Marienburg), Haghig, Belini and Aita Mare. From Feldioara, continue cycling along the Olt River for another 38 km until you reach Micloșoara, where you will have the opportunity to visit Count Kalnoky’s old medieval castle.

Micloșoara (Miklósvár) is the oldest documented settlement in the region, and its castle was first mentioned in 1211 as a border fortress between the area given to the Teutonic Order and the rest of the Kingdom of Hungary.

Day 3 Cycle from Miclosoara to Viscri - 68 km

Today the journey continues along the Olt River, passing several charming villages. There are two options to reach Viscri: a longer route that goes via Talisoara, Varghis, Ocland, Sanpaul, Cata, Rupea and on to Viscri, or a shorter route that passes Talisoara, Varghis, Jimbor, Baile Homorod and reaches Rupea.

On arrival in Rupea, you can stop for a quick lunch and visit the impressive Rupea Fortress, located on a steep hill. Afterwards, continue your journey via Dacia to Viscri, your destination for the day and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Viscri is a historic Saxon settlement, recognised by UNESCO for its archaeological and cultural importance. The buildings and setting are straight out of a postcard, with whitewashed houses, thatched roofs and local artisans keeping traditions alive. Most famous is the 12th-century white fortified church, one of Transylvania’s best-preserved treasures.

Viscri is also an inspiring example of community tourism, where local residents have worked to preserve the village’s authentic charm and history. Buildings, arts and crafts have been carefully nurtured, making it a unique place where you can experience a genuine piece of Transylvania’s rich cultural heritage.

Day 4 Cycle from Viscri to Cincsor - 52 km

Today you will leave Viscri and head towards the village of Dacia, where you first will cycle 15 km on a paved road to the village of Jibert. You will then cross a wild and scenic forest hill, a distance of 8 km. The climb from Jibert to the forest is demanding, but the reward is breath-taking views. From the top of the forest, a paved road leads all the way to the village of Cobor.

In Cobor, you have the opportunity to visit a biodiversity farm, where horses and cows are managed organically. Here you can also enjoy a local organic lunch. After lunch, you will continue on gravel roads for 10 km, before a paved road takes over and leads you to the final destination of the day, Cincșor.

Day 5 Cycle from Cincsor to Sighisoara - 68 km

Today, a day on paved roads awaits, taking you from the village of Cincșor to the medieval fortress of Sighișoara, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From Cincșor, head north to the village of Dealu Frumos, also known as ‘The Beautiful Hill’, which is the geographical centre of Romania. From there, continue through Agnita and on to Sighișoara. You can choose to have lunch in Agnita or Apold on the way.

Upon arrival in Sighișoara, it is recommended that you take time to explore the historic centre of the citadel. Sighișoara is one of the seven medieval fortified cities in the region and is both the best preserved and still inhabited. The charming, bohemian citadel is filled with history and hidden places – a photographer’s dream.

Day 6 Cycle from Sighisoara to Alma Vii - 45 km

Today’s bike ride starts with a lovely visit to the village of Biertan, which was the first of Transylvania’s villages to receive UNESCO status. After leaving Sighișoara, the ride gets busier, and it’s important to pay attention during the first five kilometers, as there´s a bit mer traffic on this stretch.

Along the way, you will pass the villages of Valchid and Copșa Mare before reaching Biertan. Here, we recommend visiting the fortified church, one of the region’s most iconic sights. The church’s imposing walls and tall spires, surrounded by lush green hills, create one of Romania’s most picturesque views. Be sure to enjoy a soup or snack at the local restaurant.

From Biertan, continue a short but beautiful bike ride through scenic, rolling hills to the village of Alma Vii, another charming Saxon village that has preserved its traditional character.

Day 7 Cycle from Alma Vii to Sibiu - 59 km

Start the day by cycling through the Hârtibaciu Valley towards Nocrich, a pottery centre where you can take a break and admire the local crafts. You then continue towards Sibiu, your final destination. The last stretch to Sibiu is fully paved, but the last 15 kilometres can be busy. As an alternative, there is a less busy road with partial gravel.

Sibiu is a perfect end to your Transylvanian cycling adventure. Named European Capital of Culture a decade ago, the city offers a charming mix of history and culture. After checking into your chosen hotel, take a short walk through Sibiu and discover its highlights, such as the Old Town, the medieval fortress and the Brukenthal Museum.

Review for transylvania
5/5
Cycling in Transylvania is recommended! The organization exceeded expectations.
We, five “guys” in our 60s, were pleasantly surprised — most things exceeded our expectations. The local organizer was good and available for questions/tips 24/7. Our e-bikes were in good condition (some lacked fenders). All accommodations were significantly better than expected! We ate well — cheap and tasty food, including quite decent local wine and beer. Friendly people everywhere. The historic landscape was beautiful and unique, with all the small Saxon villages, churches, and nesting storks. Roads were in good condition with light traffic. Negative: the transfer to/from Bucharest took longer than expected (5–6 hours).
