León – Santiago de Compostela

Pilgrim cycling – León to Santiago de Compostela – 7 days

Make an unforgettable cycling holiday along the final part of the Camino Francés pilgrimage route, from the medieval city of León to Santiago de Compostela. Cycling the route is an excellent choice as it is fairly easy to navigate, and there are many fantastic places to visit along the way.

Starting in León, you will eventually leave the seemingly endless Meseta behind and cycle into a diverse and hilly landscape. The journey takes you through charming villages and into Galicia, Spain’s green corner, a region strongly influenced by Celtic culture. At the end of the journey, you will reach the magnificent and legendary cathedral in Santiago de Compostela – the culmination of your long and beautiful trip along the Camino Francés.

The route length, in terms of days, kilometers, etc., is planned according to what we consider suitable. If you want to make the trip longer or shorter, we can often adjust it to your preferences.

Difficulty level

The daily stages vary between approximately 59 and 70 km, mostly along small country roads. There are no particular technical difficulties, but some parts of the route include climbs. We therefore classify it as moderate to challenging, 3–4 on a 5-point scale.

Weather

The climate in the area is very mild, being close to the Atlantic. The average temperature is around 15°C throughout the year, and extreme temperature fluctuations are rare. Summer months are usually dry and warm, while spring and autumn are mild and ideal for cycling, though with some risk of rain showers.

  • The final 300 km of the Camino Francés

Itinerary

Day 1 Arrival to León

Check in at your hotel in central León. Take the opportunity to visit the impressive cathedral – a prime example of Spanish Gothic architecture – the Church of San Isidoro, and last but not least: Casa de los Botines, a work by the Catalan architect Gaudí.

Day 2 From León to Rabanal del Camino – 66 km

This first stage takes you through Hospital de Órbigo and its famous Romanesque bridge. Here, you can also start to glimpse the silhouette of the Picos de Europa peaks on the horizon. You will also pass Astorga, a fantastic small town. We highly recommend taking a break here for a walk and to admire the town’s architecture, including the beautiful cathedral and the Bishop’s Palace designed by Gaudí.

The journey then continues through the region of La Maragatería and crosses the Monts de León mountains before reaching Rabanal del Camino, a charming small village dominated by stone houses.

66 km

Day 3 From Rabanal del Camino to Villafranca del Bierzo – 59 km

The day begins as you pass the famous Cruz de Ferro, the Iron Cross, a simple yet renowned pilgrim symbol located at 1,505 meters above sea level. As a pilgrim, you are expected to follow the tradition and throw a stone onto the pile as you pass.

The route then takes you downhill and straight west through the villages of Manjarín, El Acebo, Molinaseca, and Ponferrada, continuing through the El Bierzo valley along fruit trees, vineyards, and tobacco fields all the way to Villafranca del Bierzo. This beautiful small town is known as a stopover for sick pilgrims who could not continue on to Santiago.

59 km

Day 4 From Villafranca del Bierzo to Samos – 67 km

67 km

Day 5 From Samos to Palas de Rei – 60 km

From Samos, you pass several typical hórreos, granaries built on the same principle as our timber houses, and the landscape is stunningly beautiful. The route goes via Portomarín, a village that was affected by a flood in 1962, where you can see the remains of the old Romanesque bridge. You then continue through gently rolling terrain to Palas de Rei for an overnight stay.

60 km

Day 6 From Palas de Rei to Santiago de Compostela – 70 km

Last day! You start by cycling up to Monte de Gozo, where you are rewarded with a view over all of Santiago de Compostela, a UNESCO World Heritage site. You approach your destination, passing, among others, the monastery and the Archbishop’s Palace along the way, before finally cycling into Santiago and reaching the legendary cathedral.
