Lakes around Munich

Cycle along the lakes around Munich

This trip offers fresh, invigorating air and a chance to take some time for yourself. During the journey, you’ll cycle past several of Bavaria’s famous lakes, enjoy the majestic mountain ranges on the horizon, and stroll through charming old towns adorned with flowers. The towns you pass through are colorful and characterized by baroque architecture. The trip offers both unspoiled nature and delightful Bavarian tradition.

Itinerary

8 days/ 7 nights

Day 1 Arrival day

When you arrive in Munich, you will receive information about the week and assistance with adjusting your bike if desired. Bavaria’s capital is well worth exploring — there’s plenty to do, such as visiting the English Garden, the Town Hall, and the Hofbräuhaus.

Day 2 Cycling from Munich to Murnau am Staffelsee - 65 km

From Munich, the tour begins with a ride through Forstenrieder Park to Lake Starnberg. You then continue along the lake toward Seeshaupt, passing several rustic Bavarian towns along the way. To reach today’s final destination, you’ll cycle past the beautiful Osterseen and Riegsee lakes.

Day 3 Cycling from Murnau am Staffelsee to Garmisch Partenkirchen - 40 km

You’ll start the day by cycling through the Murnauer Moos nature reserve, the largest wetland area in Central Europe. Today’s ride also offers enchanting, unspoiled nature along the Loisach River, which will lead you to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Since today’s stage is a bit shorter, you’ll have the opportunity to take the Zugspitzbahn up to 2,962 meters above sea level, where you’ll be rewarded with a magical view over the Alps.

Day 4 Cycling from Garmisch Partenkirchen to Wallgau - 20 km (70 km)

By bike, you’ll travel from Garmisch-Partenkirchen via Klais to the beautiful Lake Barmsee. From there, you can either continue directly to your accommodation or take a detour via Mittenwald and Scharnitz to the source of the Isar River. The climb to Scharnitz is about 300 meters in elevation, followed by a gentle ascent through wild, romantic gorges and lush alpine meadows to the river’s source. You’ll then cycle back through a sunny valley with stunning panoramic views of the Karwendel and Wetterstein mountains, pass through Mittenwald, and finally arrive in Wallgau — a place where Bavarian tradition is still very much part of everyday life.

Day 5 Cycling from Wallgau to Bad Tölz - 50 km

Day five of this cycling adventure will take you to the stunning Lake Sylvenstein, with its crystal-clear turquoise waters inviting you to take a swim or enjoy a picnic by the shore. When you’re ready to continue, you’ll cycle toward Lenggries and eventually arrive in Bad Tölz. This town quickly became a flourishing trading center thanks to its location on the Isar River and along the old salt route from Reichenhall and Allgäu. Here, you’ll find elegant manor houses that bear witness to its golden era.

Day 6 Cycling around Bad Tölz - 45 km

The day begins with a ride through the scenic Tegernsee landscape to Gmund, located by Lake Tegernsee. From here, you’ll have a beautiful panoramic view of the lake — a perfect spot to enjoy lunch or simply take a break and soak in the scenery. After cycling through the Gaissbach Valley, you’ll return to Bad Tölz, where you can end the day with a visit to the charming Tölzer Market Street.

Day 7 Cycling from Bad Tölz to Munich - 60 km

On the final day of your cycling tour, you’ll follow the bike path along the Isar River from Bad Tölz through Geretsried and Wolfratshausen to Grünwald. After a few gentle climbs, you’ll once again roll into Bavaria’s capital, Munich. If you have the time and energy, it’s definitely worth exploring the city once you arrive.
