St Jean Pied de Port – Santiago de Compostela – 34 days

El Camino de Santiago – A Classic Pilgrimage Through Spain

This journey follows the legendary pilgrimage route El Camino de Santiago, from France across the Pyrenees and through northern Spain. The adventure begins grandly with the crossing of the mighty mountains, then continues westward toward the Atlantic coast and the mythical final destination, Santiago de Compostela.

Over 32 days of walking, you will experience the entire Camino Francés – the most famous of all the routes. The trail takes you through forests, open fields, charming villages, and historic towns filled with Roman and medieval remains. Along the way, you will pass Pamplona, known for its bull runs, La Rioja with its renowned wines, the medieval city of Burgos, and Galicia, Spain’s green and lush corner.

Immerse yourself in Spanish culture, meet pilgrims from around the world, and be inspired by the unique atmosphere along this historic path.

Difficulty Level

Daily stages consist of 6 to 8 hours of walking on marked trails with mostly gentle ascents. On average, you will climb about 300 meters per day, except on day 2, which offers a more challenging stage with 1250 meters of ascent and little downhill walking.

Weather

The climate along the route is mild and pleasant thanks to its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. The average temperature is around 15°C throughout the year, and extreme temperature variations are rare. Summers are usually warm and dry, while spring and autumn offer comfortable conditions for hiking, although occasional rain showers can occur.

Highlights

  • Complete the entire Camino Francés, from St. Jean Pied de Port to Santiago de Compostela.
  • Varied landscapes – from the Pyrenees, across plains, and through the green hills of Galicia.
  • Hike through León, Burgos, and Pamplona – the grandest cities of northern Spain.

Day 18 From Terradillos de los Templarios to El Burgo Ranero – 30 km

25 km, 6 h

Day 26 From Villafranca del Bierzo to O Cebreiro – 27 km

Today we walk uphill and cross the border into Galicia to O Cebreiro, a charming and distinctive village with its stone houses topped with thatched roofs, known as “Pallozas.”

27 km, 8 h

Day 27 From O Cebreiro to Triacastela (overnight stay in Samos) – 23 km

The walk begins beautifully at the crest of a ridge. We follow the path down through green Galicia, along pines and eucalyptus trees. Finally, we reach Triacastela, where a taxi takes you to Samos for an overnight stay.

23 km, 6 h

Day 28 From Triacastela to Sarria – 18 km

After breakfast, a taxi takes you back to Triacastela, where we have two possible routes to today’s destination, Sarria. The northern route passes through the picturesque villages of Montán and Pintín.

18 km, 5 h

Day 29 From Sarria to Portomarín – 23 km

We pass typical hórreos, granaries built on the same principles as our timber houses, and the landscape is breathtakingly beautiful.
