Welcome to the South Tyrol! Hike in the heart of the Trentino Alto Adige region, along the Chestnut Route. This hiking trail in the shadow of the Dolomites offers breathtaking views of landscapes filled with ancient monasteries, fine castles, small villages and fantastic vineyards. Along the way, we pass picturesque villages such as the artistic village of Chiusa, and lively small towns such as Bolzano, the gateway to the Dolomites.

The walk is relatively easy. On days when the hike can be tougher, there are options to shorten the stage.

Itinerary

Day 1 Arrival in Bressanone

Welcome to Bressanone, the oldest town in the South Tyrol. Here you will spend your first evening among old colourful buildings and cosy little alleys.

Day 2 Hike from Novacella Monastery to Velturno - 15 or 10 km

We start the day with a 10-minute bus ride to the Augustinian monastery of Novacella. From here we walk along picturesque country roads and small paths through lush forests and fine vineyards before reaching the small village of Velturno. Surrounded by chestnut trees and high mountains, we end the day at our lovely accommodation.

Day 3 Hike from Velturno to Barbiano - 14.5 or 16 km

Today’s route offers not only stunning views but also two educational stops. The hike takes us along small mountain paths with incredible views of vineyards, picturesque villages and lush forests below. On a steep cliff surrounded by thousands of vines lies the first stop of the day, the Sabiona Monastery. Stroll around and learn more about this historic site before heading down to the village of Chiusa, just below the monastery. Chiusa is considered one of Italy’s finest villages, here you will take a well-deserved lunch break before we continue. After lunch, leave Chiusa behind and walk the last bit down to Barbiano, a nice little town on the Isarco river.

Day 4 Hike from Barbiano to Collalbo - 10.5 or 15 km

Today’s hike takes us through green, lush forests and colourful orchards to Collalbo. This small village is located on the Renon plateau, a well-known ski centre and a paradise for nature lovers. Here we spend the night, surrounded by mountain peaks and beautiful fields.

Day 5 Hike around Collalbo - 11 km

Today we walk along the Renon plateau, surrounded by lush forest and alpine meadows. Stop at the beautiful Lake Kematen and enjoy a delicious lunch. Our walk then continues past the typical earth pyramids before reaching the Renon train that takes us the last bit down to Collalbo.
11 km, +400 m, -366 m

Day 6 Hike from Collalbo to Bolzano - 16 or 18 km

Today we leave Collalbo and walk through a landscape full of castles, mansions and farms. The last stretch to Bolzano is by bus. (Start today’s walk before 08.00 to avoid missing the last bus). Take the rest of the day to explore this lively little town filled with artistic beauties.
18 km, +591 m, – 1396 m

Day 7 Hiking on the Alpe di Siusi plateau - 13 km

After a 30-minute bus ride from Bolzano, we reach the Alpe di Siusi mountain plateau. From here we take a cable car up to the small village of Compatsch. There we start today’s easy hike along Europe’s largest alpine plateau. The walk takes you through small mountain huts and picturesque villages with beautiful views of the jagged peaks of the Dolomites. Today’s hike ends with a cable car and bus back to Bolzano where we spend our last evening and night.

Getting to the destination

Plane

The nearest airport is Innsbruck (INN). You can also fly to Milan (MXP or LIN) or Venice (VCE).

Train

Take the train from Innsbruck to Bressanone, journey time is about 1h 30 min. Search your trip on Trenitalia.

On your return journey, take the train from Bolzano. Search your trip on Trenitalia.

Private transfer

Private transfers from the airport can be booked. Please contact us for prices.
However, the distance from the airport is quite far, so transfers will be expensive, we therefore recommend train.
