Tenerife & La Gomera

Hike in the beautiful Canary Islands of Tenerife & La Gomera

In Tenerife and La Gomera you will find all the fascinating landscapes that the Canary Islands offer, right next to each other. Both islands are of volcanic origin, but with very different natures. Tenerife is dominated by colourful lava fields, vast and barren, at the foot of Spain’s highest peak El Teide. Neighbouring La Gomera is the greenest of the Canary Islands, with dense vegetation, including old trees covered in moss, giving the impression of a tropical rainforest. Equally beautiful are the sculpted landscapes of the valleys, where terraces have been constructed for exotic plantations of bananas, papayas and mangoes.
Both islands offer endless hiking opportunities, with sunny weather throughout the year.
During the week you will stay in two charming hotels with swimming pools, and the last night in a hotel in San Sebastian de la Gomera.

Highlights

  • Diverse environments with ‘lunar landscapes’, lush vegetation and a stunning coastline
  • Accommodation in two charming family-run hotels in small villages
  • Hiking on the top of El Teide volcano, the highest peak in Spain (3718m)

Day 2 Hike from Paisaje Lunar to Vilaflor – 14 km

In the morning, take the local bus to Parador at El Teide. Today’s hike takes about 2.5 hours and goes around Roques de Garcia, near Parador. Alternatively, you can take the cable car to the top of El Teide (3500m) and hike around the summit, then take the cable car back down and hike back to Parador.
Note! The last bus back leaves at about 16.00 from Parador. Bus tickets for return cost about 5 EUR per person.

On arrival in San Sebastián de La Gomera, a taxi will take you to El Contadero, a remote crossroad high up in the Garajonay National Park. From here you have about a 4.5-hour hike down to Hermigua, in the beautiful national park.
Tonight you will stay in a charming, rural hotel in Hermigua.

La Gomera
A very nice hiking week, especially La Gomera with its green vegetation and sometimes dramatic landscapes. Varied environments and views from day to day. Good accommodations on La Gomera. A small minus for Tenerife, which could have been better replaced with more hiking days near Valle Gran Rey where many hiked. I can recommend ending with a few days in the holiday resort Valle Gran Rey; even the bus trip over the mountains there was worth the effort, as well as the day hike up the “cliff” by the sea with a view one does not forget.

Fantastic hikes
Very nice trip. Incredibly beautiful nature to hike in. Moderately challenging hikes. Great with the app and the routes mapped so you could follow via GPS. Pleasant, family-run hotels. It would have been nice if dinner had not been included every day in Vilaflor. Most things worked well (on one occasion the transport did not arrive, which meant we missed the boat to La Gomera and therefore missed one of the hikes).
