Take a stroll through the bustling historic centre, the perfect way to prepare for the week ahead.

Day 2 Hike from Trier to Bullay - 17 km

We start today’s hike by crossing the Moselle River and climbing up to the colourful sandstone cliff in the Trier Stadtwald forest. From here, you’ll hike along a stunning high-altitude road with beautiful views of the Moselle and Hunsrück before arriving at the Biewer and Eifel foothills. Here you hike through vast forests and plateaus all the way to the ‘Ehranger Kanzel’. From here you continue down to the river Kyll, further through the Eifel forests to Schweich. By train you reach the charming village of Bullay, on the Moselle River, with its many inns called ‘Straußwirtschaften’. Here you spend the rest of the evening and night!

Today’s hike starts on the legendary Moselle Wine Railway and crosses Germany’s longest hanging viaduct in the Art Deco town of Traben-Trabach. Climb steeply to Grevenstein Castle and continue on the ‘Franzosensteig’ trail, via spiral staircases and ferratas straight through the ruins. We recommend stopping here to enjoy the fantastic views down to the river. The hike continues along the Kirster Grat ridge, with stunning views to Enkirch, where we recommend visiting the historic half-timbered houses. The final stretch takes you through stunningly beautiful wine-growing areas and picturesque vineyards to Bullay, where a wine tasting of the best Moselle wines awaits.

After the descent and river crossing near Neef, you hike up Mount Calmont on the other side. Here you hike up Europe’s steepest vineyard, where grapes are grown at an incline of up to 55 degrees. You continue from here via a high-altitude Roman settlement overlooking the ‘Todesangst’ rock spire, past the ‘Galgenlay-Pavillon’. Here you take the train to Cochem.

Along hiking trails high above the river you continue to the legendary refuge ‘Wingerts Budche’. The hike continues through the Dortebachtal nature reserve, the Pomeranian Forest and the ferrata, through the Schilzer basin which offers pleasant hiking conditions in the shade. Through the beautiful green vineyards you reach the Martberg mountain, where you can visit a finely restored Roman temple complex.
