Cotswold Way - hike through picturesque villages and typical English countryside, from Chipping Campden to Bath

This hike takes you from the Cotswold’s most charming town, Chipping Campden to classic Bath. During your journey you will hike through typical English countryside. The route takes you over hills with stunning panoramic views of the Severn Vale, across open meadows, through beech forests and past picturesque villages with whitewashed houses. This is a hiking route with relatively challenging stretches, but it’s well worth it as you’ll get nature experiences you won’t soon forget! Not only is the scenery magical, but the route is lined with many different places to stop for food and drink. A pint perhaps? Or some afternoon tea? The hike ends in the famous spa town of Bath with its ancient Roman baths – simply a perfect ending after days of hiking.

Day 1 Arrival in Chipping Campden

We recommend getting here early, as Chipping Campden is one of the Costwold’s prettiest towns, dating back to the 15th century. There’s plenty to discover here, including the historic Hidcote Manor Garden and Kiftsgate. You’ll also find the church of St James here, which is well worth a visit.

Day 2 Hike from Chipping Campden till Stanton/Wood Stanway - 16.8/20 km

You start the day by hiking over the Dover Hills, which offer a lovely view of the countryside. The trail passes through the village of Broadway, where there are many small cosy cafes and tea rooms, in other words, this is a perfect place for lunch. Once you have replenished your energy stores, you continue through the English countryside with the destination Stanton or Wood Stanway.

Day 3 Hike from Stanton/Wood Stanway to Prestbury Hill - 24.8/21.5 km

Today you have the chance to soak up a lot of history during the hike. In the village of Stanway you will find the beautiful manor house of Stanway House. At Winchcombe you will find a crossroad that played an important role in the Middle Ages. Before Winchcombe you will pass both Beckbury Camps and Hailes Abbey, dating back to the Middle Ages. The day’s route ends in Prestbury Hill.

Day 4 Hike from Prestbury Hill to Birdlip - 21.6 km

The hiking route today offers fantastic opportunities for incredible views and ends in the small village of Birdlip.

Day 5 Hike from Birdlip to King Stanley - 26.4 km

The day starts by hiking through woodland, and in spring the flowers are in abundance in the forests. After lunch, which may have been enjoyed in Painswick, the hike continues along what is known as the magnificent section of the Cotswold Way. This section runs through ancient woodland, interspersed with beautiful panoramic views.

Day 6 Hike from King Stanley to Wotten-under-Edge - 23.2 km

The day starts with an easy hike to Duersley, passing both Stone Age burial chambers and other ancient sites. The route then continues towards Tyndale Monument, which is a very beautiful place and really worth spending some extra time here. The final destination of the day is Wotton-under-Edge, which is a quaint rural village where there are several small cosy shops and restaurants. Perfect for recovering and getting ready for tomorrow.

Day 7 Hike from Wotton-under-Edge to Old Sodbury - 20.8 km

Today’s hike starts through a landscape filled with mills and small streams. This is reminiscent of the wool trade, which has been very important to the area. On the way to the final destination of the day, Old Sodbury, you will pass the cosy villages of Hawkesbury Upton and Horton.

Day 8 Hike from Old Sodbury to Cold Ashton- 13,6 km

Today the focus is on Cold Ashton. You will pass the beautiful Dyrham Park, which we recommend a stop in. The day offers many opportunities to stop for tea, snacks, drinks and cosy meals.

Day 9 Hike from Cold Ashton to Bath - 16 km

The last day of the journey is packed with wonderful impressions. Once in Bath, there is much to discover. The city is full of theatres, museums and beautiful buildings. There’s also the famous Roman Baths, which might be just what you need after several hard days of hiking! If you want more time to explore Bath, we can help you book extra nights.

Day 4 Hike from Cleeve Hill to Birdlip - 24.8 km

The hiking route today offers fantastic views of the hilly landscape and ends in the small village of Birdlip.

Day 5 Hike from Birdlip to Kings Stanley - 26,4 km

Day 8 Hike from Tormarton to Bath - 26.4 km

The last day of the journey is packed with wonderful impressions. Once in Bath, there is much to discover. The city is full of theatres, museums and beautiful buildings. Day 3 Hike from Winchcombe to Seven Springs - 22.4 km

At Winchcombe you will pass both Beckbury Camps and Hailes Abbey, dating back to medieval times. The hike ends at Seven Springs.

Day 4 Hike from Seven Springs to Painswick - 22.4 km

Today will be a varied hike through woods and across meadows. During the day you will pass Coopers Hill, where the ‘Cheese Rolling Festival’ is held. The day ends in the charming town of Painswick.

Day 5 Hike from Painswick to Dursley - 28 km

The day begins with a hike through woodland, and in the spring the woodland flowers are in abundance. After lunch, which may have been enjoyed in Painswick, the hike continues along what is known as the grandest part of the Cotswold Way. Lush forests, old villages and wide open spaces are passed before arriving at Dursley, an old market town.

Day 6 Hike from Dursley to Old Sodbury - 32 km

Today’s hike goes through a landscape filled with mills and small streams, reminiscent of the wool trade that has been very important to the area. The night is spent in Old Sodbury.

Day 7 Hike from Old Sodbury to Bath - 29.6 km

The last day of the trip is packed with wonderful flavours and sights. Once in Bath, there is much to discover. The city is full of theatres, museums and beautiful buildings. There’s also the famous Roman Baths, which might be just what you need after several hard days of hiking! If you want more time to explore Bath, we can help you book extra nights.

Getting to the destination

Plane

Birmingham (BHX) is the closest Airport to fly to.
You can also fly to any London Airport. Whichever you choose, you can then continue by train or bus to Chipping Campden.

Local transport

Chipping Campden has no railway station, but you can take a train and then change to a bus from any major city, such as London, Birmingham or Oxford.
