Pilgrimage from Burgos to León – 9 days

From medieval Burgos to beautiful León stretches this walk. The beginning of the route takes us through parts of the Meseta Central – a magnificent, rocky, and dry landscape that invites reflection and contemplation. The trail then continues through charming Castilian villages such as Castrojeriz, Frómista, and Carrión de los Condes.

The climate in the area is very mild as it lies near the Atlantic. The average temperature is around 15°C throughout the year, and extreme temperature fluctuations are unusual. The summer months are typically dry and warm, while spring and autumn are mild and ideal for hiking, though there is a slight risk of rain showers.

Itinerary

Day 1 Arrival to Burgos

Check in at your hotel in medieval Burgos in the late afternoon.

Overnight stay with breakfast.

Day 2 From Burgos to Castrojeriz – 27 km

To shorten this 40 km stretch, we provide transport from Burgos. The hike instead starts in Tardajos and then ends in Castrojeriz, a beautiful village of Romanesque origin, beautifully situated on a hill.

Day 3 Från Castrojeriz till Frómista – 24 km

From Castrojeriz to Frómista, you walk through vast wheat fields. Once in Frómista, you can well deserve a rest amid the magnificent setting of the Church of San Martín.

Day 4 From Frómista to Carrión del los Condes – 22 km

Today’s walk takes you to Carrión de los Condes, a large village situated along the route. The village retains its original charm with many well-preserved historic houses, churches, and not least, the monastery of San Zoilo.

Day 5 From Carrión de los Condes to Terradillos de los Templarios – 26 km

From Carrión de los Condes, we cross the heart of the Mezeta, a straight and flat walk to Terradillos de los Templarios. As the name suggests, this small town was once an important center for the Knights Templar, an order from the 13th century whose task was to protect pilgrims from ongoing wars and conflicts.

Day 6 From Terradillos de los Templarios to El Burgo Ranero – 30 km

You pass through Sahagún, a town that bears witness to a magnificent past with many well-preserved and grand historic buildings. The walk ends in the village of El Burgo, known for its houses built from earth and clay.

Day 7 From El Burgo Ranero to Mansilla de las Mulas (overnight stay in Villacelama) – 21 km

Via the village of Reliegos, you continue walking through the open plains to Mansilla de las Mulas, a picturesque old village where parts of the 12th-century town wall are still intact. From here, there is a short transfer to the accommodation in Villacelama.

Day 8 From Mansilla de las Mulas to León – 19 km

After a short transfer back to Mansilla, the walk concludes in the city of León, which boasts, among other sights, La Casa de los Botines – a work by the Catalan architect Gaudí – as well as a magnificent cathedral and the Church of San Isidoro.

Day 9 Departure

Breakfast and check-out; thereafter, your journey with us concludes.
