Itinerary

Porto Côvo to Sagres - 11 days/ 10 nights

Day 1 Arrival in Porto Côvo

Welcome to Porto Côvo! After checking in at the hotel, you will be met by a Vicentina Travel member for a briefing on all aspects of the tour. The evening and night will be spent in this beautiful little coastal town.

Day 2 Hike from Porto Côvo to Milfontes - 20 km

In the morning, we recommend you to stock up on supplies for the day, as you will not be able to buy anything during the day. At least 1.5 litres of water per person and sun protection are essential. Today you are facing a pleasant but quite demanding hike (lack of shade), crossing an unexplored area, with amazing views. If you are not an experienced hiker, we would recommend you to choose one of the two options available – 14 km or 8 km.
20 km, + 167 m, – 149 m

Day 3 Hike from Milfontes to Longuiera/ Almograve - 18 km

Today you have two different hikes to choose from:
A) Take a small ferry across the river.
B) Cross the bridge and take the road from the beginning.
Both options are relatively easy, crossing fields and small cliffs, with access to several beaches on the way to Almograve, further south. This is a nice place to have lunch and enjoy the local gastronomy. After lunch, it is time to explore the beach of Almograve. Almograve is a very small town and therefore you normally stay about 3 km inland, in Longueira.
18 km, + 263 m, – 283 m

Day 4 Hike from Almograve to Zambujeira do Mar - 21 km

After a short transfer, you will start today’s hike from Almograve, along the beautiful coast of the Alentejo. Along the way, you will pass the fishing harbour of Zambujeira (Entrada da Barca – on the way). Here, you can hike among the rocks and enjoy the marvellous panoramic views. In the small village of Cavaleiro, you can stop to buy some supplies and enjoy a tasty homemade local dish, before continuing westwards to the beautiful Cabo Sardão lighthouse. Finally, you will arrive at Zambujeira do Mar, with one of the most beautiful beaches in Portugal.
21 km, +203 m, -193 m

Day 5 Hike from Zambujeira do Mar to Odeceixe - 18 km

Today you will hike along one of the most popular hiking trails, used by fishermen heading south towards Odeceixe, the first village in the Algarve region. Along the way, there’s plenty to explore, touch and smell, including Carvalhal Beach, the residence of famous ‘fado’ singer Amália Rodrigues and the famous harbour of Azenha do Mar. After recharging your batteries at Azenha do Mar’s seafood restaurant, your hike continues to Odeceixe, where the bridge over the river forms the border between the Alentejo and Algarve regions.
18 km, + 263 m, – 293 m

Day 6 Hike from Odeceixe to Aljezur - 23 km

Today you will leave Odeceixe and continue along the south-west coast, passing close to the banks of the ‘ceixe’. From here you will hike southwards, into the Algarve region, where you will stay in the Moorish village of Aljezur.
23 km, + 405 m, – 395 m

Day 7 Hike from Aljezur to Arrifana beach - 18/12 km

Today the hike continues to Arrifana Beach. To add a few kilometres to today’s hike, you can choose to follow the fishermen’s path, which will take you to Arrifana Beach, by the cliffs, with stunning views of the sea. This is a wonderful place to spend some time and enjoy the beach.
18 km (12 km), + 345 m (+ 224 m), – 288 m (- 184 m)

Day 8 Hike from Arrifana beach to Carrapateira - 20/22 km

This hike goes along the coast with a fantastic sea view. We start in the very beautiful and historic village of Porto Côvo. Soon after you will pass a small island called ‘Ilha do Pessegueiro’, with the possibility to walk along the beach or go a little more inland along the dunes. The evening and night are spent in Carrapateira.
20 km (22 km), + 413 m (+ 300 m), – 500 m (-250 m)

Day 9 Hike from Carrapateira to Vila do Bispo - 22/16 km

Option A – This hike will again give you beautiful colours, cliffs by the sea, amazing flat fields at the bottom of the valley, small rivers flowing towards the sea and temporary ponds, which are extremely important for the strong natural biodiversity. In this area there will also be opportunities to watch beautiful and unique bird species, especially as you approach Vila do Bispo.
Option B – This hike takes you through the ‘fishermen’s trail’, where the Atlantic Ocean offers stunning views with a unique landscape to enjoy.
22 km (16 km), + 299 m (+500 m), – 206 m (-420 m)

Day 10 Hike from Vila do Bispo to Sagres (St. Vicentin´s Cape) - 21 km

The last stage of our adventure takes you to the most southwestern point of the European continent. A special place, not only because of its special location, but also because of its important role during the Portuguese voyage of discovery. It is also a famous destination for many pilgrims faithful to St Vincent. Also here, there is a very strong and rich area for bird watching, so pay attention and keep your binoculars ready.

We strongly suggest that you take the hike from Sagres to the city of Lagos in 3 stages, as these coastal trails are new and part of the Fishermen’s Trail in Rota Vicentina, which allows you to hike from:

  • Sagres to Salema – 19,5 Km

Three slightly more challenging stages and you still have time to lie on the beach and enjoy!

Beautiful, majestic, and fascinating
We hiked from Porto Covo to Odeceixe in early November. Four days with good hiking weather, around 20 degrees and partly cloudy. Mostly we hiked on narrow, sandy paths on the cliffs close to the coastline. About 30–50 meters below, the powerful waves of the Atlantic rolled in and created a constant spectacle. A couple of the stages were more strenuous due to the loose sand on the paths. Otherwise very good conditions and well-marked trails. We were well received by the staff at the accommodations, with an extra star for AL-Odeceixe Verde. In summary, we are very satisfied with this hike.
