7 days/ 6 nights

Day 1 Arrival in Eguisheim

Welcome to Eguisheim! One of the most beautiful villages in Alsace, about 8 km from Colmar and nestled in a green and leafy setting at the foot of the Three Castles. This small medieval village, with its unique architecture and colourful buildings, welcomes you with both charm and authenticity.

Day 2 Hike from Eguisheim to Turckheim – 14 km

The first climb of the week takes you to Eguisheim Castle, at 600 metres altitude, and then on to Hohlandsbourg Castle, with a stunning panoramic view of the Alsace plain and its many villages. From here you return down into the valley again for the next part of the hike, which takes you to the pretty town of Turckheim. Here you’ll find a night watchman in traditional 16th-century costume who sings a song about the extinction of fires every summer evening. The rest of the evening is spent in this cosy little town, surrounded by rolling hills and beautiful vineyards.

Day 3 Hike from Turckheim to Kayserberg – 14 km

Today’s hike takes you through the famous vineyards of Alsace, from Turckheim to Kaysersberg, the birthplace of Dr Albert Schweitzer, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. With its cobbled streets and richly decorated half-timbered houses, it revives the memory of the Roman road that linked Alsace to Lorraine.

Day 4 Hike from Kayserberg to Munster – 23 km

During today’s stage you will get your first impressions of the Vosges. From Kaysersberg you will hike to the village of Labaroche and the summit of the Petit Hohnack (927 m). After the Croix de Wihr pass (840 m) you will hike on to Munster, in the heart of the Vosges. This small town and its green valley is famous for its cheese of the same name, one of the culinary symbols of the region. Enjoy one of the region’s specialities, cheese with caraway seeds and a glass of Pinot Gris or Gewurtztraminer. A pure delight!

Day 5 Hike from Munster to Wintzfelden – 15 km

Today you will leave Munster and continue your hike in the direction of Wassenberg, where you will find the ruins of a castle located at an altitude of 746 metres. You will start today’s hike by crossing the top of the Mühlenkopf (805 m) to see the vineyards and the village of Wintzfelden in the valley below. Don’t miss a stop at one of the many ‘fermes-auberges’ that you will pass on your way. These old summer farms where shepherds used to welcome hikers to share their meal, now serve products from their own farms. Here you can taste, for example, the ‘repas marcaire’ or one of the other delicious local specialities. The evening and night are spent in Wintzfelden, a small village surrounded by beautiful nature.
15 km, + 791 m, – 810 m

Day 6 Hike from Wintzfelden to Eguisheim – 17 km

Today you will follow a beautiful terraced path, with views over the Rhine Valley. You’ll hike towards Gueberschwihr, a pretty little village known for its famous vineyard and beautiful Roman bell tower. Before returning to Eguisheim, along the way you will discover traces of the Celts, who, when the Romans forced them to abandon the fertile lands of the Alsace plain, took refuge in the heights and settled on the Vosges mountain peaks.
Finally, you will return to Eguisheim after a great week of hiking!

Hiking in Alsace
A lovely hike in beautiful scenery. Just the right level of effort in hilly terrain. Cozy villages, nice hotels with good breakfasts. Downside: Getting from Colmar to Eguisheim upon arrival. Tricky to find a taxi when you haven’t been there before.
