O Cebreiro – Santiago de Compostela

Pilgrimage Cycling – O Cebreiro to Santiago de Compostela – 6 days

Make an unforgettable cycling holiday along the final part of the Camino Francés pilgrimage route, from O Cebreiro to Santiago de Compostela. Cycling this route is an excellent choice as it is fairly easy to navigate and offers many fantastic places to visit along the way.

Starting in O Cebreiro, you gradually leave the seemingly endless Meseta behind and cycle into a diverse and hilly landscape. The journey passes through charming villages and continues into Galicia, Spain’s green corner, a region strongly influenced by Celtic culture. At the end of the trip, you arrive at the magnificent and legendary cathedral in Santiago de Compostela – the culmination of your long and beautiful journey along the Camino Francés.

The trip’s length, in terms of days and kilometers, is planned according to the distances we consider suitable. If you wish to make the journey longer or shorter, it can often be adjusted to your preferences.

Difficulty Level

The daily stages range between approximately 21 and 46 km, mostly along small country roads. There are no particular technical challenges, but some sections of the route include uphill climbs. We therefore classify it as easy to moderate, 2–3 on a 5-point scale.

Weather

The climate in the area is very mild, being close to the Atlantic. Average temperatures are around 15°C throughout the year, and extreme temperature fluctuations are uncommon. Summer months tend to be dry and warm, while spring and autumn are mild and excellent for cycling, though there is some risk of rain showers.

  • The final and popular 150 km of the Camino Francés.
  • Cycle through Galicia, Spain’s green corner.

Itinerary

Day 1 Arrival OCH Cebreiro

Check in at your hotel in the charming village of O Cebreiro, known for its distinctive stone houses with thatched roofs, called “Pallozas.”

Day 2 From O Cebreiro to Sarria – 41 km

On the first day, you leave O Cebreiro behind and follow the trail along a ridge before it descends into the green region of Galicia, passing through pine and eucalyptus trees. Upon reaching Tricastela, there are two possible routes to today’s stage destination, Sarria. The southern route takes you via Samos, a historic walk where you can visit, among other things, Spain’s oldest Benedictine monastery. The northern route passes through the picturesque villages of Montán and Pintín.

41 km

Day 3 From Sarria to Palas de Rei – 45 km

This stage takes you through the heart of Galicia, where green is the dominant color. You pass typical hórreos, granaries built on the same principle as our timber houses, and the landscape is breathtakingly beautiful. The route goes via Portomarín, a village affected by a flood in 1962, where you can still see remnants of the old Romanesque bridge. After that, the terrain is gently undulating until Palas de Rei.

45 km

Day 4 From Palas de Rei to A Rua – 46 km

Today’s cycling takes us through several charming villages, including San Xulian do Camino with its small 14th-century church dedicated to Saint Julian, and Furelos, where you cross a medieval bridge. We recommend a lunch stop in the town of Melide, known for its specialty Pulpo a la Gallega, a local octopus dish.

The route to A Rua passes through oak forests and lush meadows. Worth stopping at are the medieval sanctuary of Santa Irene and the Baroque fountain, whose waters are said to be healing. Along the way, you will also pass several villages whose names have the same meaning as “Camino”: Brea, Calzada, Rua, and A Calle.

46 km

Day 5 From A Rua to Santiago de Compostela – 21 km

Last day! You start by cycling up to Monte de Gozo, where you are rewarded with a view over all of Santiago de Compostela, a UNESCO World Heritage site. You approach your destination, passing the monastery and the Archbishop’s palace along the way, before finally riding into Santiago and reaching the legendary cathedral.
