Picos de Europa

Hike in the beautiful Picos de Europa mountain range

The Picos de Europa is a truly impressive mountain range in northern Spain. The mountains rise dramatically from the Bay of Biscay, up to high altitudes between the lush northern coast and the arid central plain. Rushing rivers have carved deep ravines in the limestone, leaving sharp vertical peaks in the background. With spectacular elevation changes and microclimates, an endless variety of environments are created, with a large number of alpine flowers and varied fauna.
This 8 day trekking trip is available in two variants:
Option 1 – This trek has a difficulty level of 4/ 5 and 2-star accommodation.

Itinerary

Picos de Europa - Trek

Day 1 Arrival in Arenas de Cabrales

Check in at the hotel, centrally located in Arenas. Savour the local cider and gaze out over the landscape.
We also recommend to visit the Romanesque church of Santa Maria de Llas.

Day 2 Hike from Poncebos to Cordinanes – 18 km

Today’s hike is a real classic in the Picos, with a strikingly beautiful landscape.
After a short but steep climb, the path levels out as you make your way towards Caín, on a long flat section. From there you have the choice of continuing further up the valley or taking a taxi to the hotel in Cordinanes.

Day 3 Hike from Cordinanes to Espinama– 16 km

The day starts with a short transfer Posada de Valdeón. The hike starts with a climb on the historic traders’ trail “el Camin del Mercadillo”, which leads from Posada de Valdeón to Liébana. After 7 km of hiking with 800 metres of ascent, you will reach the meadows of Caben Remoña, located on the border between the provinces of León and Cantabria. Here you can choose to hike all the way down to Espinama (9 km with -900m) or take the spectacular high road via Vega de Liordes down to Fuente Dé.
20 km, +680 m, -100 m, 6.5 h

Day 4 Hike from Espinama to Sotres – 16 km

Today you either first hike to Fuente Dé and take the cable car to the top, or you hike directly from Espinama to the Áliva pass (1645m). You then continue along a glacial moraine, where thousands of sheep, cows and horses graze every summer.
Finally you will arrive in Sotres, the highest village in the Picos, at 1050m.
16 km, +800 m (+1250 m), -900 m (-1150 m), 7 h (8 h)

Day 5 Hike around the Andara massif - 12,5 km (16 km)

After a short transfer, a beautiful and very varied trail begins in the eastern massif of Andara. The first part goes through a historical mining area and leads you into the heart of the massif. At its highest point, you will reach 2215m. You end the hike by descending on cattle trails, back to your hotel in Sotres.
12,5 km (16 km), +650 m (+1050 m), -900 m (-1300 m), 5,5 h (8 h)

Day 6 Hike from Sotres to Vega de Urriellu – 10 km

The highlight of today’s trek is the legendary Picu Urriellu – also called Naranjo de Bulnes – a stunning peak and a mecca for climbers.
Today’s trek takes you to a very beautiful moon-like landscape in the heart of the massif, where good hiking meets stunning views.
Tonight you will stay in a refuge/hut and carry your own essentials. Early in the season there can still be a lot of snow, and the refuge is then closed. If this is the case, there is another variant of this hike and accommodation will be in hotels instead.
10 km, +1050 m, -150 m, 5 h

Day 7 Hiking from Vega de Uriellu to Poncebos – 8,5 km

On your final day, you’ll explore yet another aspect of the Picos, as you hike down a steep path to the Camburero Gorge and the remote village of Bulnes. You then continue your journey through the Teju Gorge before finally reach Poncebos. From here you will take a local bus back to Arenas, cost about 2 EUR per person.

Day 7 Hike from Espinama to Potes – 24 km

Picos de Europa
A fantastic trip with very varied hikes, good accommodations with accommodating staff, and perfectly functioning transfers. An extra plus was the first day’s dinner (Casa Xurde), where the region’s specialties were presented.

Picos Hike
Fantastic hiking in varied nature. The transfers worked perfectly, very good service. Breakfast could have been better/more at some places as the hikes require energy.
