Provence is known for its beautiful landscape of rolling hills with dramatic mountains in the background. Not only is the landscape beautiful, but it is also home to some of the best wine producers. The journey starts in the picturesque town of Avignon and continues to Venasque, one of the most beautiful villages in France. From Venasque, you’ll head into the Vaucluse region. Here you’ll find countless vineyards and cosy villages up in the mountains that are all worth a visit. You will cycle in the Côtes du Ventoux area, where both cycling and wine have a great importance. This is where you’ll find the infamous Mont Ventoux mountain, a recurring obstacle in the Tour de France. The wine from this area has grapes grown at a higher altitude, giving the wine a lighter and fruitier character. The final destination of the trip is Châteauneuf Du Pape, which is known worldwide for its red wine. This trip offers you to discover an outstanding wine paradise. This is a trip that gives you the opportunity to discover all the beauty that this area has to offer, everything from nature, food, culture and not least the wine.
The daily stages are between 37 – 46 km. You cycle on small quiet roads. The landscape is hilly but the bike rides are relatively easy. You cycle on your own with the help of maps and GPX files for navigation on your phone.

Itinerary
8 days/ 7 nights
Day 1 Arrival in Avignon
Avignon is the city where your cycling adventure begins. This is a beautiful city that is cool to explore. Avignon was the European Capital of Culture in 2000. Here you will find Place du Palais, Place de L’Horloge and Le Pont Saint-Benezet, which are all worth a visit. You’ll also find plenty of cafés and restaurants to visit in the city, offering fantastic food and drinks.
NOTE! Bike collection takes place at 09.00 on day two. However, on Sundays the bike pick-up is closed so if you arrive on a Saturday, bike pick-up will be at 17.00-18.00 on the same day.
Deposit fee is reserved on credit card when picking up bikes: 150€ for hybrid bike & 450€ for electric bike.
Day 2 Cycling from Avignon to Venasque - 43 km
Today you will leave Avignon behind to set your sights on Venasque. You’ll pass the magical town of L’Isle sur la Sorgue, which is known as the Venice of Provence because of its maze of canals. Here you will also find many antique shops that are fun to look into. Enjoy lunch or a coffee in the town before getting back on your bike to head to Venasque. The town is at a slightly higher altitude which means you’ll have to do some light climbing to reach the village. Once there, you’ll be greeted by incredible views in one of the most beautiful villages in France.
43 km, +430 m, -200 m
Day 3 Cycling from Venasque to Bédoin – 30 km
During this day, the cycling route will go through a slightly more mountainous area. For example, you will cycle at the foot of Mont Ventoux and along the river Sorgue. The river flows through a lush landscape and also cools down the area on hot summer days. This makes the area ideal for growing grapes. The final destination of the day is the cosy village of Bédoin, which exudes the Provençal atmosphere.
30 km, +450 m, -390 m
Day 4 Cycling around Bedoin 27/ 40 km
Today’s cycle tour starts and ends in the village of Bedoin. You can now immerse yourself in Côtes du Ventoux country and enjoy pedalling through charming and atmospheric villages, all nestled idyllically under the mighty Mont Ventoux mountain. Wine has been made here since the first century AD and has been consumed – and written about – by popes and kings for centuries. The higher altitude of the grapes grown in this region gives rise to lighter, fruity white, red and rosé wines, which are a tasty distraction during your cycling tour of the region.
Today you can choose between two tours:
Bedoin – Crillon – Bedoin: 27 km +/-330m. On the way to Crillon, we recommend stopping for a walk in Bedoin, and perhaps lunch in Crillon le Brave, overlooking Mont Ventoux.
Bedoin – Suzette – Bedoin: 40 km +/-675m. A beautiful loop through vineyards, with villages like Lafare and Suzette. On the way back, the route crosses the Col de la Madeleine, with sweeping views of the Rhone Valley before descending back to Bedoin.
Day 5 Cycling from Bédoin to Chateauneuf du Pape - 52 km
The charming villages of Beaumes-de-Venise (sweet Muscat) and Vacqueyras (red wines) are the first highlights of today’s tour in the Southern Rhone Valley. Along the way, you will pass several wineries where you have the chance to taste their wines. At the end of today’s tour, you will cycle up to the famous village of Châteauneuf du Pape.
52 km, +400m / -640m
Day 6 Cycling around Châteauneuf du Pape - 17/ 35 km
Today you’ll have the opportunity to explore the area around Châteauneuf-du-Pape. You’ll visit the neighboring wine villages of Bédarrides, Courthézon, Orange, and Sorgues. If you prefer not to cycle too much, there are plenty of restaurants and cafés where you can stop to soak up the atmosphere.
If you wish, you can spend half the day at a vineyard. You can schedule the visit either in the morning or the afternoon; however, it’s not available on Sundays and is not included in the tour, so it must be booked in advance.
Today, you can choose between two circular routes:
Châteauneuf-du-Pape – Orange – Châteauneuf-du-Pape, 35 km, +/-230 m
A lovely loop to Orange and its ancient theatre: you’ll cycle along small country roads through vineyards and fields, with a few short stretches on bike paths. You’ll pass several wineries — perfect for a tasting stop! — including the renowned estates of Mont Redon and Solitude.
Châteauneuf-du-Pape – Île de l’Oiselet – Châteauneuf-du-Pape, 17 km, +/-30 m
A short ride around Châteauneuf-du-Pape, passing well-known estates and circling the small island of Oiselet before returning to the village. You can bring a picnic lunch and find a quiet spot to enjoy it on l’Île de l’Oiselet, or have lunch back in Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
Day 7 Cycling from Châteauneuf du Pape to Avignon – 42 km
Today’s journey, from Châteauneuf du Pape to Avignon, takes you along the Rhône River and across. You will cycle through typical Provençal villages and small country roads westwards to Tavel, France’s capital of rosé wines. You’ll cross the Rhône once more to reach Avignon, where you’ll spend your last night. +130m/-180m
Rented bikes will be returned before 18:00.
