Ribadeo – Santiago de Compostela

Pilgrimage Ribadeo – Santiago de Compostela – 11 days

In Ribadeo, you leave the coast and the region of Asturias behind and begin your journey inland, deep into the unspoiled Galician countryside. Landscape, language, and culture – everything changes with each step you take. The scenery remains beautifully green, but the blue ocean backdrop gradually disappears. Along the way, you’ll pass several Galician villages such as Mondoñedo, Vilalba, and Sobrado, before the trail eventually joins the Camino Francés in Arzúa.

This is a calm and peaceful route to Santiago de Compostela, set in a varied and picturesque landscape.

Difficulty

Between 4–7.5 hours / 16–29 km per day in gently rolling terrain.

Weather

The climate in this region is mild thanks to its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. Average temperatures are around 15°C throughout the year, and extreme variations are rare. Summers tend to be dry and warm, while spring and autumn are mild and ideal for hiking, though occasional rain showers can occur.

Highlights

  • The final stage of the Camino del Norte
  • Galicia’s peaceful mountains and friendly people
  • The legendary cathedral in Santiago de Compostela

Itinerary

Day 1 Arrival to Ribadeo

Check in at your hotel in Ribadeo.

If you arrive early, you can take a taxi or train to Playa de las Catedrales, located about 8 km from Ribadeo.

If you prefer to stay in town, we recommend a stroll to Plaza de España, the charming main square of Ribadeo.

Day 2 From Ribadeo to Lourenza – 27 km

Your first day of hiking takes you away from the sea and into Galicia’s beautiful eucalyptus forests.

It’s a long day with several ascents and descents, but the terrain is not too difficult, and the stunning surroundings more than make up for the effort.

You’ll enter Lourenzá via a medieval bridge, and upon arrival, you’ll be transferred to your accommodation located about 7 km outside the town.

27 km, 7.5 hours

Day 3 From Lourenza to Abadin – 27 km

Today’s hike is hilly, but the effort is rewarded halfway through with a visit to the cathedral in Mondoñedo. Inside, you’ll find Galicia’s Diocesan Museum, which proudly displays an impressive collection of religious artifacts and artworks from the region.

27 km, 7 hours

Day 4 From Abadin to Vilalba – 19 km

Today offers a chance to rest your legs, as the hike through the Terra Chá region is relatively flat. You’ll walk through meadows and pastures, interspersed with small streams and wooded areas.

19 km, 5 hours

Day 5 From Vilalba to Baamonde – 21 km

Today’s hike is again relatively easy. You’ll walk mostly through forested areas and pass several medieval remains along the way. At the end of the day, a transfer will take you to your accommodation in the small village of Friol.

21 km, 5.5 hours

Day 6 From Baamonde to Miraz – 16 km

After breakfast, a transfer will take you to Baamonde, the starting point for today’s walk. If you didn’t have the chance yesterday, we recommend visiting the beautiful Church of Santiago, as today’s stage is relatively short. In the evening, you’ll once again be transferred back to Friol for overnight accommodation.

16 km, 4 hours

Day 7 From Miraz to Sobrado dos Monxe – 26 km

After breakfast, you will be transferred back to Miraz, where today’s walk begins. The route takes you through beautiful, varied landscapes, and upon reaching Sobrado dos Monxes, we recommend visiting the Santa Maria Monastery. At the end of the day, you will be transferred back to Friol for your third and final overnight stay there.

26 km, 6.5 hours

Day 8 From Sobrado dos Monxe to Arzúa – 22,5 km

The day begins with transport from Friol to Sobrado dos Monxes. This is your final day of hiking before reaching the Camino Francés in Arzúa. The goal of this long hike, Santiago de Compostela, is drawing near!

22.5 km, 5.5 h

Day 9 From Arzúa to A Rua – 18 km

The penultimate day of hiking before reaching the long-awaited destination of Santiago de Compostela. Today’s hike ends at A Rua for overnight accommodation.

18 km, 4.5 h

Day 10 A Rua to Santiago de Compostela – 22 km

This is your last day of hiking before reaching the end of your pilgrimage. You approach Santiago de Compostela via Monte de Gozo, which offers a fantastic view over the entire city. Upon arrival in Santiago, a UNESCO World Heritage site, there are many interesting places to visit, including the magnificent cathedral, Plaza de Obradoiro, the Hostal de los Reyes Católicos monastery, and the Archbishop’s Palace, Palace of Raxoi.
