Santiago de Compostela – Fisterra

Pilgrimage hike Santiago de Compostela – Fisterra – 6 days

From Santiago de Compostela to the Finisterre cape – “the end of the world” – is, according to legend, where Saint James’ body miraculously arrived by boat before being buried at Finisterre by his faithful disciples. Finisterre, or Fisterra in Galician, has long been an important destination for pilgrims wishing to express their devotion to Saint James. During the Middle Ages, pilgrims flocked to this, according to many, magical place and collected the shells that today form the well-known symbol of the pilgrimage.

Today, the Camino Finisterre offers the opportunity to extend your pilgrimage beyond Compostela and experience the feeling of truly reaching the world’s end, as the trail ends at the Atlantic Ocean. You also get the chance to discover the real Galicia, its lush landscapes, small villages, and the hospitality of its people.

Difficulty level

Between 5–7 hours daily over relatively flat terrain with few ascents and descents. Some sections can be shortened if desired, depending on transport availability.

Weather

The climate in the area is very mild as it lies close to the Atlantic. Average temperatures are around 15°C throughout the year, and extreme fluctuations are rare. Summers are usually dry and warm, while spring and autumn are mild and excellent for hiking, though there is a slight risk of rain showers.

Highlights

  • Hike along the majestic Atlantic coast
  • The perfect feeling of reaching the end of the road
  • Genuine, green Galicia with its medieval villages

Itinerary

Day 1 Arrival to Santiago de Compostela

Check in at your hotel in Santiago de Compostela in the late afternoon. For those wishing to delve into art and history, there is an almost overwhelming amount to see and do here. In addition to the magnificent cathedral, you can visit a pilgrim museum, a very popular modern art gallery, and stroll through the charming streets of the old town. Afterwards, we recommend enjoying a delicious meal featuring Galicia’s famous seafood and white wine.

Day 2 From Santiago de Compostela to Negreira – 20.7 km

The first day’s hike goes from Santiago, through eucalyptus and pine forests up to Trasmonte, where you are rewarded with a beautiful view over all of Santiago de Compostela. After this, the walk gently descends via Ponte Sarela and the small region of Amaia. You then follow the Tambre River through the charming village of Ponte Maceira to today’s destination, Negreira.

20.7 km, 5 h 15 min

Day 3 From Negreira to Porteliñas – 26,5 km

Today you tackle the longest stage along the Camino Finisterre, from Negreira to Porteliñas. The hike begins with an uphill stretch through woodland. You pass several charming churches at Zas, A Pena, and Vilaserio, and when you finally reach Porteliñas, a taxi will take you to A Picota (or Chacín) for your overnight stay.

26.5 km, 7 h

Day 4 From Porteliñas to Cée – 25,5 km

In the morning, a taxi takes you back to Porteliñas. From there, you hike through beautiful scenery with stunning views of cliffs and the sea. It is a fairly long and secluded stretch, but the scenery and nature make it more than worth it! Today’s destination is the small fishing town of Cée, where you will also stay overnight.

25.5 km, 7 h

Day 5 From Cée to Fisterra – 18 km

This final stage of the Camino Finisterre is definitely a worthy conclusion. You hike with views over the Atlantic cliffs, through small forests, and at the beautiful Playa Langosteira beach you can take off your boots and walk barefoot in the sand.

In the last few kilometers, you hike uphill to the lighthouse and spectacularly complete your journey to the “end of the world.”
