Sarria – Santiago de Compostela

Pilgrimage Sarria – Santiago de Compostela – 8 or 7 days

This is a shortened version of the final stage of the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage route. Starting in Sarria, you walk through Galicia, Spain’s green corner, passing several charming villages along the way. To make the walk less demanding, we break up the long stage between Palas de Rei and Arzúa with an overnight stay in Melide. After several days of walking through forests and green fields, you finally reach the magnificent cathedral in Santiago de Compostela – the culmination of your beautiful journey along the Camino Francés.

Difficulty level

3 to 8 hours of walking per day on mostly flat terrain. Only the section between Melide and Arzúa is hilly.

Weather

The climate in the area is very mild due to its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. The average annual temperature is around 15°C, and extreme temperature fluctuations are rare. The summer months are usually dry and warm, while spring and autumn are mild and ideal for walking, though with some risk of rain showers.

Highlights

  • The most popular section of the Camino Francés
  • Hike through Galicia, Spain’s green corner
  • The legendary cathedral in Santiago de Compostela

Itinerary

8 days/ 7 nights

Day 1 Arrival Sarria

Check in at your hotel in Sarria. Overnight stay.

Day 2 From Sarria to Portomarín – 23 km

This first section takes you through the heart of Galicia, where green is the dominant color. You pass typical hórreos, granaries built on the same principles as our timber houses, and the landscape is breathtakingly beautiful. Portomarín is today’s final destination, a village affected by a flood in 1962, where you can see remnants of the old Romanesque bridge.

23 km, 5 h 45 min

Day 3 From Portomarín to Palas de Rei – 25 km

From Portomarín, you cross the Minho River and then hike uphill until you reach the small Romanesque church of Santa Maria. After relatively flat walking through forests, fields, and eucalyptus plantations, you ascend again over the Sierra de Ligonde and Alto Rosario. Afterward, it’s a pleasant descent for the remainder of the route to the village of Palas de Rei.

25 km, 6 h 25 min

Day 4 From Palas de Rei to Melide – 15 km

Today’s hike takes us through several charming villages, including San Xulian do Camino with its small 14th-century church dedicated to Saint Julian, and Furelos, where you cross a medieval bridge. Upon arrival in Melide, we recommend trying Pulpo a la Gallega, a local dish made with octopus.

15 km, 4 h

Day 5 From Melide to Arzúa – 14 km

From Melide, you continue walking mostly on flat terrain to Arzúa. Arzúa is the last town before Santiago, and the route passes from village to village, through forests, farmland, and waterways.

14 km, 3.5 h

Day 6 From Arzúa – Lavacolla – 29 km

The penultimate stage before reaching Santiago de Compostela. The day’s final destination is Lavacolla, where pilgrims in the past had the ritual of washing their feet in the river to be clean upon arriving in Santiago.

29 km – 33 km, 7.5 h

Day 7 From Lavacolla to Santiago de Compostela – 12 km

Last day! We make our way up to Monte de Gozo, where we have a view over all of Santiago de Compostela, a UNESCO World Heritage site. We approach the destination and along the way pass, among others, the monastery and the Archbishop’s Palace, before finally arriving in Santiago and the legendary cathedral.

12 km, 2.75 h

Day 5 From Castañeda (or Arzúa) to A Rua – 24 km

The route to A Rua goes through oak forests and lush meadows. Worth stopping at are the medieval sanctuary of Santa Irene and the Baroque fountain, whose waters are said to be healing. Along the way, you also pass several villages whose names share the meaning of “Camino”: Brea, Calzada, Rua, and A Calle.

Exceeded expectations – very nice hotel/hostel
Good support regarding information before the trip. Functioning pickup/delivery of luggage during the trip. Exceeded expectations regarding hotel standard and their location in the village/town. Loved the charming hacienda in Arzua. Minus for the description of the terrain between Melide and Arzua, which was not flat, and the distance to Lavacolla, which was not 2.9 km but rather 3.3 km. Evertrek, however, received the information wisely and has made corrections. Beautiful terrain, close to villages, people, and animals. Wonderful trip!
