Via Francigena - St Bernard Pass to Ivrea

Hike in Northern Italy along the St Bernard Pass

Welcome to Italy! This exciting journey will take you in the footsteps of the pilgrims along the St Bernard Pass, one of the highest mountain passes in Europe. This emblematic route offers incredible views and landscapes as well as visits to some of the most historic and well-preserved sites of the mountain range, such as a 1000-year-old hospital and the town of Etroubles. This beautiful trail follows small paths through vineyards, irrigation canals and historic villages with incredible food culture. Our journey starts in Gran St Bernard (St Bernard Pass) at the cosy accommodation Hotel Italia. Here you can enjoy good food and stunning views of lakes and mountain peaks. After a wonderful and memorable week, the trip ends in beautiful Ivrea, a small town near Turin. Enjoy the cosy little squares, alleys and the charming river that runs through the town.

Via Francigena
This hiking holiday is part of the Via Francigena long-distance route, which stretches from Canterbury in England to Rome in Italy. In Italy we offer several different stages of the Via Francigena, the first of which starts up in the Alps at the St Bernard Pass. From here it continues in the Aosta Valley, then southwards across the Po Valley, and on to the final destination in Rome. Along the Via Francigena you have the opportunity to visit vineyards, churches, castles and cosy medieval villages filled with history. Of course, you will also eat good food and, if you want, fine local wines.

Day 2 Hike from Gran St Bernard Pass to Etroubles - 13.5 km

Today we leave the Gran St Bernard Pass and head out into the mountains. Today’s route goes along smaller paths through an incredibly beautiful environment, with small mountain villages scattered here and there surrounded by green meadows and fantastic views. Some parts of today’s hike are relatively steep so there are several alternative routes that are easier. Towards the afternoon we arrive in the cosy village of Etroubles, where we spend the rest of the evening and night.

Day 3 Hike from Etroubles to Aosta - 15.5 km

Today’s route takes us along the rugged mountains, through meadows and beautiful pine forests until we reach the old stream ‘Ru Neuf’, where we stop for a short break. The last bit to the final destination of the day, Aosta, is all downhill. So instead of hiking the last bit, you can choose to take a bus to explore the small village of Gignod, before returning to Aosta.

Day 4 Hike from Aosta to Nus - 16 km

Today we will walk through a beautiful and unique landscape with grand castles and picturesque vineyards as surroundings. The uniqueness of this area besides the castles are all the hemispherical carvings found in the mountains, made by prehistoric people.
The day ends in the mountain village of Nus.

Day 5 Hike from Nus to Saint Vincent - 17 km

The first stage of the day takes you along old man-made canals, which still irrigate the crops on the slopes of the Valle d’Aosta. The walk then continues into a wine district, here you have the chance to visit the sacred temple of Crotta de Vegneron. The evening ends in Saint Vincent.

Day 6 Hike from Saint Vincent to Verrés - 16.5 km

Today we leave Saint Vincent and walk down the valley towards the beautiful Saint German Castle. From here we walk along the old road, Strada della Gallie. The last part of the today’s hike takes us through stunning scenery over rugged mountains and through lush forests before we reach our final destination of Verrés.

Day 7 Hike from Verrés to Pont Saint Martin - 13 km

Today we will take a short trip back in time. During the day we walk past the old parish church of San Martino before crossing the ancient Enchallod Bridge. Take the chance to look for traces of Roman chariots on ‘The ancient road of the Guals’. After a lovely and interesting day we arrive in Pont Saint Martin.

Day 8 Hike from Pont Saint Martin to Ivrea - 21 km

Today’s hike takes us through a stunning area of rolling Piedmont hills, pretty little mountain villages and a countryside full of wildlife and beautiful scenery. Our final destination is the picturesque town of Ivrea. Here, in addition to enjoying fine castles, interesting museums and modern architecture, you can also take part in the incredible food culture the town offers.

Torbjörn och Ann-Mari Backesten on a hike
Good luggage handling and OK hotels. A day in Geneva before G. Saint Bernard + a day in Turin after Ivrea. Good for sightseeing and not having to rush back home. Tips (if you don’t already know them 😉) are to cut your toenails “hiking short”. Bring power bars and water (skip the offered lunch boxes). Do NOT drink the water found in various places, even if it is controlled. At the end of the day’s stage, head directly towards the booked hotel — it does not match the app, and a 1 km detour after a full day of hiking is no fun. We recommend the trip.
