Mountain biking in Istria

The idyllic Istrian peninsula lies midway between Croatia and Italy. On this mountain biking holiday, you’ll become one with the green and blue of the lush and unspoilt landscape. Cycle with the sea breeze in your face as you pass through old railway tunnels, bridges, enchanting forests, olive groves and through vineyards in the area around Motuvun, known as Croatia’s Tuscany.
Experience a journey through time where you will come across protected cultural monuments, impressive historic castles and timeless nature reserves.
The cycling is about 75% on gravel roads and paths, about 25% on asphalt. Difficulty is 3-4 on a 5 degree scale, as you cycle about 40-60 km per day, in partly hilly terrain.

Itinerary

Day 1 Arrival in Buje (Poreč)

You will arrive in the charming little town of Buje, located on a hill about 10 km inland. At about 19.00 there is an information meeting with our local guide, where you will receive your bike, maps, etc.

Day 2 Cycling around Momjan - 43 km

Today you will cycle in the Buje area and be greeted by a wealth of aromas and flavours. The final destination of the day is Momjan, a little town with impressive ruins of the medieval citadel. Take the opportunity to visit one of the popular wine cellars where you can taste the area’s famous Muscat wine.

Day 3 Cycle from Buje to Poreč - 73 km

After breakfast you will start cycling along the legendary Parenzana railway. This railway ceased to operate in 1935, and today we have nice cycling and hiking trails along the embankment instead. You’ll cycle through several tunnels and bridges along an undulating landscape with many vineyards, and stunning viewpoints between the charming medieval town of Grožnjan and Vižinada before arriving in Poreč.
Cycle along the old town centre and visit the Roman Forum, with its magnificent palaces and of course the famous UNESCO protected cathedral ‘Eufrazijeva bazilika’

Day 4 Cycle around Poreč – 57 km

Today you will start by cycling along the coast, with beautiful bays where you can enjoy the Mediterranean sea. You will also be able to experience the beautiful landscape of this area, with vineyards and olive groves. Along the way, we recommend you to try the local cuisine, with great wine, brandy and honey. Later in the day you will arrive in Višnjan, which has an observatory ranked as one of the five most famous in the world.

Day 5 Cycle from Poreč to Rovinj – 62 km

Today you will cycle the ‘Captain Morgan’s bike trail’ which offers rare birds, an abandoned monastery, hidden pirate treasures, coves and caves. Along the coast, you will first arrive at the romantic fishing village of Vrsar, before passing through the magical Kontija forest with panoramic views of the beautiful Limfjord landscape. You will then cycle through an area where many legends and mysteries rest, e.g. in the village of Mrgani, named after Captain Morgan. The day’s cycling ends when you arrive in Rovinj – ‘Little Venice’

Day 6 Cycle from Rovinj to Pula - 42 km

Along the coast towards Pula, you will cycle through the Palud bird sanctuary, with over 200 different bird species. You will then reach the village of Fažana, beautifully situated in the Brioni archipelago, which is now a national park. The day’s cycling ends in the town of Pula. Perhaps you will take the opportunity to visit the impressive amphitheatre, before enjoying one of the city’s restaurants.

Day 7 Cycle the Kamenjak headland - 40 km

Today you’ll cycle along the coast to the Kamenjak headland, surrounded by 30 km of coastline with many bays and white beaches, so make sure to take at least one nice swim along the way. On the way you will also find 22 different types of orchids, including the ‘Serapias Istriaca’ (Istrian orchid).

Getting to the destination

Plane

The nearest airports to fly to are Pula (PUY) or Venice (VCE). (The closest airport is Trieste (TRS) but the flight connections are not the best). You can also fly to Rijeka (RJK).

Transfer

Local transports

From Pula to Porec: Local bus takes about 1h 30 min with the bus companies Brioni and FILS. From Porec we can then arrange transport to Buje.
From Venice to Porec: You can go by boat, about 2h 45 min, goes only 1 time per day.
From Venice to Trieste: Take train, about 2 hours, then private transfer from Trieste to Buje.
