Itinerary

7 days/ 6 nights - Comfort version

Day 1 Arrival in Porto

You will arrive in the vibrant city of Porto, which is very pleasant to stroll through with its narrow streets and alleys.

Day 2 Cycle from Porto to Ovar – 51 km

You’ll cycle through the old part of Porto, before crossing the Don Luis Bridge, designed by Gustave Eiffel. Then, almost all the way to Ovar is along quiet roads near the sea. You will pass many small beaches, such as Praia de Valadares, Francelos and Miramar, which are great places to take a break, have a swim and enjoy the sun. From Espinho, continue on a cycle path through pine forests to Furadouro beach, then reach Ovar.
51 km, +300 m

Day 3 Cycling around Ovar - 38 km

Today is a bit special. Far away from the sea, you will have the opportunity to discover the incredible and historical secrets of Portugal. Leave Ovar and cycle inland. The goal is to reach Santa Maria da Feira. The town’s most distinctive feature is its medieval castle, with a design that is unusual for Portuguese castles, looking more like something straight out of a storybook. You can also visit the Convento dos Lóios museum, a 16th-century monastery, which has a unique and well-preserved convent church. The town also has a fountain at the centre of a stunning staircase, which zigzags up to the western façade of the adjoining Church of the Holy Spirit. Explore this beautiful region and fall even more in love with Portuguese culture.
38 km, + 500 m

Day 4 Cycle from Ovar to Aveiro – 54 km

Today’s route is a fairly easy and pleasant day by the sea, with flat cycling. Today you will experience, among other things, the large sand dunes of the São Jacinto nature reserve. From São Jacinto, take your bike on the ferry to Aveiro, known as ‘little Venice’.
54 km, + 200 m

Day 5 Cycle from Aveiro to Praia da Mira – 49 km

Leaving Aveiro, you will cycle along a path that crosses ponds, where salt is extracted using an old traditional method passed down for generations. After crossing the main bridge, you will reach Barra, a typical village located on a narrow sand dune between the sea and the Ria. You will later pass by Costa Nova, the most famous beach in Aveiro. Here you will discover the ‘palheiros’, the striped coloured houses of Costa Nova.
49 km, + 200 m

Day 6 Cycle from Praia da Mira to Coimbra – 60 km

You will leave Praia de Mira and cycle inland towards Coimbra. The day starts on dirt roads until you reach the Mondego River, which leads you to the heart of Coimbra. Take the opportunity to visit Coimbra, which has a lot to offer.
60 km, +500 m

Biking - 5 friends
Problems at bike pickup. There were only 4 bikes for the 5 of us, plus a mountain bike that no one wanted. It took extra time to get an additional bike. Good bikes but slightly worn bike bags. Beautiful cycling paths through villages and countryside. Well-planned route. Often very good bike lanes. Easy to follow the GPS instructions. However, some parts of the cycling were a bit dull. Roads were removed and dug up in two places, requiring a detour. Friendly, nice hotels in good locations. Transfers worked well (luggage between hotels and to/from the airport).

Atlantic Coast cycling with 4 friends
Excellent briefing and handover of bikes by a friendly young man from Nature Trials. Fantastic car-free bike paths on great bikes. Good GPS app that was easy to follow. We took extra nights in Porto and ended the trip with a few days in amazing Lisbon.
