Lake Iseo

Hike around the beautiful Lake Iseo in northern Italy

Welcome to Italy! Nestled among the picturesque landscapes of Northern Italy you will find Lake Iseo, a real gem that offers travellers to enjoy it’s fascinating charm. Imagine a place where crystal clear waters calmly lap against the rocky shores and lush green hills adorned with vineyards and olive groves all around. All this is Lake Iseo, an oasis of calm and natural beauty that captivates the minds and hearts of all who venture here. Monte Isola, the largest inhabited island in the European lakes, can be found here, with its colourful boats, narrow streets and steep staircases, stone villages, small shops and lakeside cafés. The island also offers walks among olive trees and beautiful forests, until you reach the ‘Sanctuary of the Madonna della Ceriola’, at the top of the island. Here you can enjoy a stunning view of the landscape below.
During the week you will also walk the ‘Via Valeriana’, a medieval pilgrimage and trade route that beautifully runs along the eastern shore of the lake. Olive groves, meadows, forests, churches and small villages, nothing is missing in this nature trip where the views of the lake are unrivalled.

Itinerary

Day 1 Arrival in Paratico/ Sarnico

Welcome to Italy! Your journey begins in the lakeside town of Paratico or Sarnico on the shoreline of Lake Iseo. After checking in, you’ll have the rest of the day free to explore the town and take in the views of the beautiful mountains around the lake. In the following days, you will explore the small towns, viewpoints and forests on both sides of Lake Iseo.
Tomorrow the journey really begins!

Day 2 Hike around Sarnico - 10.5 km

You start this exciting journey with an easy warm-up walk along the lakeside of the south-west side of Lake Iseo. From Sarnico you follow a small path with panoramic views of Sebino, crossing chestnut groves into the forest to the plateau of Mt.Predore, from where you can enjoy a very nice view of the south side of Lake Iseo before gently descending towards the lake again. Finally, you will reach the small village of Pedore, where you will take the ferry or bus back to Sarnico.

10,5 km + 730 m – 730 m

Day 3 Hike around Lake Iseo and Pilzone - 11 km

The day starts with a transfer to the starting point of the walk, in Iseo, just a few steps from the Torbiere del Sebino Nature Reserve. Located south of Iseo, between the lake and Franciacorta, the reserve is a small natural paradise where many bird species nest. You walk from here through quiet meadows and chestnut forests high above the eastern shore of the lake, occasionally encountering natural terraces that serve as panoramic balconies overlooking the lake and mountains. Finally you reach the small town of Pilzone, from where you take the train to the village of Sulzano, just in front of Mount Isola.

11 km + 525 m – 520 m

Day 4 Hike around Monte Isola – 9 km

Today you will take the ferry across to Monte Isola, Europe’s largest island located in a lake. The small village of Peschiera Maraglio is the starting point for today’s walk. During the day you will walk around this beautiful island, winding through olive groves and old villages to finally reach the island’s 600 metre high peak, for an exceptional 360-degree panoramic view. The final stretch back to the harbour is along a beautiful old path with stunning views.
The evening and night will be spent in Sulzano.

9 km + 450 m – 450 m

Day 5 Hike from Sulzano to Pisogne – 11,5 km (10 km)

Today you have the possibility to choose between two different hikes:
Option 1: (Sulzano to Marone): This hike heads north from Sulzano, following the ancient trade route Via Valeriana. Here you walk over olive-clad hills with views of the lake. The trail continues down to the lakeside village of Marone, where you can have lunch before taking the short train or ferry ride to Pisogne.
Option 2: (Hike around Marone): After a short train ride to Marone, you hike down into a nature reserve, home to the ‘Erosion Pyramids’. Here you will also find the ‘Cislano’, huge earth spires supporting large boulders. This is the result of a rare erosion phenomenon of which there are only a few examples in the world.

11.5 km + 460 m – 460 m (10 km) + 620 m – 620 m

Day 6 Hike around the village of Castro – 14 km

A short ferry ride across the north side of the lake takes you to the village of Castro, whose origins date back to Roman times. The ancient fortified village was built on the remains of a fortress destroyed in 1437, where a beautiful proto-Romanesque temple can still be admired. From here, a very beautiful circular walk around Mt Clemo starts. The walk ends in either Castro or in the elegant town of Lovere, where you take the ferry or bus back to Pisogne.
The evening and night are spent in Pisogne.

14 km + 740 m – 740 m
