Amalfi Coast

Hike on the beautiful Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast is considered by most to be Italy’s most beautiful stretch of coastline. It has an amazing combination of sea, picturesque coastal towns, mountains, and magnificent culture and nature. The landscape of the Amalfi Coast is dramatic, varied and surrounded by ever-changing vistas. It can be typical Mediterranean vegetation with myrtle bushes, thyme, rosemary and mastic trees, or almost alpine with meadows and bare rocks. Hiking trails are often lined with lemon groves, from which the famous local drink Limoncello is made. There are thousands of hiking trails in the area and we have tried to select the best possible routes, where you both hike along the coast, and a bit up in the mountains with fantastic views of the sea and landscape, e.g. from the famous ‘Sentiero degli dei’ – the walking path of the gods. You will of course visit charming coastal villages such as Amalfi, Atrani, Ravello, Praiano and of course the beautiful Positano.
The trip can also be extended a few days to be combined with Capri or a few nights in Positano.

Highlights

  • A dramatic and impressive stretch of coastline considered the most beautiful in Italy
  • The picturesque coastal towns of Amalfi, Atrani, Praiano and Positano
  • Impressive panoramic views from the mountains over the sea and countryside

Itinerary

Day 1 Arrival in Bomerano

The first day and night are spent in a quiet Agriturismo in the small and charming village of Bomerano, which has a lovely view of the Gulf of Salerno. If you arrive early in the day, you may have time for a short hike on the Path of the Gods.

Day 2 Hike in the mountains of Bomerano - 8.8 km

Today’s hike takes you up into the mountains above Bomerano, towards the highest peaks of the Amalfi Coast, with the most beautiful views of the coastline. You will hike through vineyards and chestnut forests before reaching Monte Tre Calli, with breathtaking 360-degree views. During the day, you will also visit the special rock formation of Il Fungo. When you get back to Bomerano, you can enjoy a coffee in the village square.
If you want to do more hiking, there are 2 more nice routes starting and ending in Bomerano.

Day 3 Hike from Bomerano to Amalfi – 11 km

Today you will hike from Bomerano down into the green Praia Valley, a marvellous landscape of steep mountain cliffs and terraced vineyards. You will reach the cave of St Barbara, where some medieval frescoes can still be found. From the cave you continue to the small village of Furore, and then in the higher part of a spectacular bay with high limestone cliffs. You will reach the village of San Lazzaro, where you can enjoy a cup of coffee or a drink and admire one of the most marvellous views of the Amalfi Coast. You then hike down a very old donkey path before reaching the coast. From here, you can continue to Amalfi through the medieval villages of Lone and Pastena, beautifully situated on the rocky beach.
11 km, +265 m, -879 m

Day 4 Hike from Ravello to Amalfi - 16.8 km (10.6 km)

Today you can either hike or take the local bus to the charming and historic village of Ravello. Still one of the most exclusive little villages on the Amalfi Coast, it boasts two magnificent villas – one of which was once home to Richard Wagner. From Ravello to Amalfi, you can either hike through the pretty little town of Atrani, through vineyards and lemon groves, or opt for a longer hike through Scala, Minuta and Pontone.
16.8 km, +759 m, -766 m (10.6 km)

Day 5 Hike around Valle delle Ferriere – 10,6 km

From Amalfi, hike up to the small village of Pontone. A highlight here is the marvellous Torre dello Zirro, where you get a dramatic view of both the Amalfi and Ravello. You’ll then enter the Valle delle Ferriere, one of southern Italy’s most beautiful nature reserves. You can here either hike along lemon groves and maquis/macchia or hike up the valley to visit some impressive waterfalls.
10.6 km, +353 m, -714 m

Day 6 Hike from Amalfi to Praiano – 11 km (13 km)

Today you will hike along the coast towards Praiano, in the heart of the Amalfi Coast, halfway between Amalfi and Positano. During the day you will visit the impressive monastery of Santa Rosa just up the coast. You will also pass through the small villages of Lone and Vettica, and hike past charming churches beautifully situated above the rocky beach. You then reach the pleasant and very beautifully located harbour of Praiano.
11 km, +734 m, – 561 m (13 km)

Day 7 Hike the beautiful trail ‘Path of the Gods’ - 9 km

Today you will hike uphill, through spectacular landscapes with interesting rock formations and soon reach one of Italy’s most famous trails ‘Sentiero degli Dei’ – the walking path of the Gods. This trail truly lives up to its name with wonderful views of the Amalfi Coast, Capri, and the Cilento (south towards Salerno). After this spectacular hike, you will finally reach the beautiful village of Positano, which is well worth spending time in, before making your way back to the hotel.

Beautiful Amalfi Coast
A good concept that can be adjusted according to preference, taste, and fitness. We sometimes chose longer routes to avoid stairs that were challenging for the knees. Interesting with such varied accommodations: peaceful countryside, the city’s pulse, and finally a beautiful seaside town. We met many friendly and accommodating Italians and will never forget their kindness 🌞

Hiking in the Amalfi area
Together with my three adult daughters, I completed a hike in the stunning Amalfi area. A 70th birthday present to myself, planned for a long time. All four of us were very satisfied with Evertrek’s arrangements: airport pickup, accommodation, breakfasts, maps, luggage transported between the stays, and printed daily itineraries. Everything exceeded expectations and worked perfectly. Friendly service everywhere. You could feel that people were happy that activities had resumed after Corona. Tip: I found a walking stick very helpful as there are many steep paths. Anna-Carin

Hiking Amalfi Coast
Fantastic trip! Quite tough hikes with steep climbs here and there, but absolutely worth the effort! The hotels La Floridiana in Amalfi and La Costa Diva in Praiano were excellent – La Floridiana is right in the center, close to the beach, with very friendly staff and a cozy atmosphere. A bonus was discovering the rooftop terrace and hot tub. La Costa Diva sits right by the sea with a wonderful view, and the staff were also very friendly and helpful there. We booked transfers through Evertrek, which worked perfectly. The GPS tracks and written instructions worked well — you really needed both. We can truly recommend this trip!

Hiking Amalfi
A wonderful trip! Very nice hotels and smooth luggage transfer. A great variety of accommodations, from agriturismo to the coast. Using GPS for the hikes is recommended due to some unclear descriptions and trail markings. The hike descriptions could be updated, for example by noting that the monastery on the Path of the Gods is now closed, so all water must be carried from the start. We are very satisfied.

Hiking the Amalfi Coast
My husband and I are very satisfied with our hiking trip. Fantastic nature. Good food. The hotels were good, but not luxurious. Luggage transfers worked perfectly. Sometimes the trail markings were a bit poor, but with the GPS it still worked well. Quite a challenging hike for a couple in their 70s!

Hiking the Amalfi Coast
Great trip with fairly challenging hikes in a hilly landscape, many steps both up and down! Cozy accommodation at an agriturismo in Bomerano, a good hotel in Amalfi, and a fantastic hotel in Praiano, La Costa Diva, right by the sea. The luggage transfer worked well. Sometimes it was a bit difficult to follow the text, so it is highly recommended to use the GPS file. At times, trail markers were missing, and in several sections the paths were overgrown and hard to find, especially certain parts of the trail from Bomerano to Amalfi. Good to bring plenty of water and packed meals. We added an extra night in Capri (Anacapri) at the end.
