La Palma

Hike on the beautiful Canary Island of La Palma

With its varied and dramatic nature, La Palma is one of the most beautiful islands in the world according to many. On this north-western Canary Island, you’ll be far away from mass tourism and can instead enjoy the calm pace and fantastic hiking opportunities. A forested ridge with peaks and volcanic craters over 2000 metres high runs the length of the island, and almost half of the island’s surface is protected.

In the unspoilt north of the island, hike along the old Camino Real, through sleepy farmland and deep ravines to the famous dragon’s blood trees of La Tosca. The hike continues westwards through mist-shrouded forests and lunar landscapes to eventually arrive at the huge crater and world-famous Caldera de Taburiente National Park.
The hike ends with dignity as you make your way up Bejenado Peak, with stunning views of the crater and all of western La Isla Bonita.

Difficulty level

The daily stages are quite long and vary between about 12 and 17 km in partly hilly terrain, on average about 600 metres of altitude per day. We classify it as medium difficulty: 3 on a 5-point scale.

Weather conditions

The climate in the area is very mild as it is close to the Atlantic Ocean. Temperatures average around 15°C throughout the year and extreme temperature fluctuations are rare. The summer months tend to be dry and warm, while spring and autumn are mild and ideal for hiking, although there is some risk of rain.

Highlights

  • A paradise for hiking - well-marked trails through peaceful and varied landscapes
  • The Caldera de Taburiente crater and national park
  • Enchanting lunar landscapes and mist-shrouded forests
  • Cosy accommodations with good quality

Itinerary

Day 1 Arrival in Palma

Arrival at La Palma airport. Transfer to your first accommodation. If you arrive early, you’ll have time for some sightseeing in the capital Santa Cruz de la Palma, or relax by the pool or on the beach.

Day 2 Hike around Cubo la Galga

Early in the morning, a transfer is organised to one of the ‘cloud forests’, typical of the Canary Islands: el Cubo de la Galga. The hike starts on wide forest paths, but then turns into both paved and unpaved country roads when you reach the coast, which is covered with plantations of the Canarian banana plátano. You can choose to end the hike after 7 or 11.7 km, at one of the bus stops where you can hop on a guagua (local bus) to Barlovento. From this northernmost town you hike another km to the nice hotel (with both indoor and outdoor pool) where you will stay for two nights.
7 km (12 km), +450 m (650 m), -400 m (-800 m)

Day 3 Hike from Fanceses to Barlovento – 11 km

Early in the morning, you’ll be transferred to one of the island’s hidden corners: Los Franceses. From here you will hike along the Camino Real, a breathtakingly beautiful trail with marvellous views, through the village of La Tosca with its distinctive dragon blood trees.
The day ends with a well-deserved rest at the hotel in Barlovento.
11 km, +925 m, – 725 m

Day 4 Hike from Pico de la Nieve to Virgen del Pino – 15,5 km (18 km)

The day begins again with a short transfer, this day to the foot of Pico de La Nieve (2039m). Today’s dramatic route follows the rim of the deep crater and the Caldera de Taburiente National Park. From here, you start the long hike down, through pine forests until you reach the chapel of Virgen del Pino.
From there you will be transferred to your accommodation for the day in Los Llanos de Aridane.
15,5 km (18 km), +625 m (+650 m), -925 m (-1025 m)

Day 5 Hike around La Caldera de Taburiente – 14 km

After transferring to Los Brecitos, located in the heart of the Caldera de Taburiente National Park, you will start the hike down to the Taburiente River. You then continue to Roque Idafe, the sacred rock with an intriguing history and Cascada de colores, a waterfall coloured by sulphur.
A transfer will then take you back to Los Llanos de Aridane.
14 km, +250 m, -900 m

Day 6 Hike from El Time to Tazacorte 7,5 km (10,5 km)

This is a real panoramic route that starts with a steep hike over an old lava flow to the western edge of the crater Taburiente. Then you gradually descend mainly on paths and small country roads to the restaurant and mirador El Time, which is the end of the regular hike.
The longer route continues further downhill, along mainly paved but quiet roads to the small beach town of Puerto Tazacorte. Take time to enjoy a good lunch before travelling back to the hotel in Llanos de Aridane, by public transport.
7,5 km (10,5 km), +250 m, -990 m (-1490 m)

Day 7 The Vulcan route - 17.5 km (8 km)

On the last day, you’ll do a classic in the island’s hiking repertoire: the Ruta de los Volcanes, between Virgen del Pilars and Los Canarios (Fuencaliente). Fortunately, this route is once again open after the last volcanic eruption at Cumbre Vieja (in September 2021). It was already a route of great geological interest, and now it is even more interesting; it shows the incredible power of nature, the consequences of which the island’s inhabitants still suffers daily.
If this route seems too long and difficult, you can ask the taxi driver to take you to Los Canarios. From here you can do only the last part of the hike, towards the Fuencaliente lighthouse (surcharge paid directly on the spot). In both cases, you will continue by local bus in the afternoon to Santa Cruz, where your luggage will be waiting for you at the hotel.
17,5 km (8 km), +550 m (80 m), -1200 m (-700 m)
