Hiking in Montenegro, at the Bay of Kotor & Lake Skadar

Self-guided hiking tour along the Montenegrin coast and Lake Skadar

Experience one of the most beautiful hiking areas in southern Europe! You’ll hike along Montenegro’s Mediterranean coast, through the UNESCO-protected Kotor Peninsula, to the largest lake in the Balkans, Lake Skadar.

In addition to stunning coastal views, you’ll enjoy the diversity of Montenegro’s landscape, culture and lifestyle as you pass through medieval villages, monasteries and magnificent national parks. You can also indulge your taste buds at one of the local inns, where you can try the famous smoked ham and cheese from Njegusi, accompanied by a glass of Montenegrin wine.

Difficulty level

6-7 hours of hiking per day (4.7-16 km) on established hiking trails, with only short sections on gravel roads. Some steep and mainly rocky slopes and descents. Climbs of up to 900 metres. We estimate the difficulty to be medium, 3 on a 5-point scale.

Weather conditions

Montenegro has a Mediterranean climate on the coast, with alpine conditions in the mountains. For hiking, it is most pleasant in spring or early autumn while summers can be hot (average summer temperature is 27°C).

  • UNESCO World Heritage Site - Bay of Kotor with its well-preserved medieval towns

Itinerary

Day 1 Arrival in Kotor

Today you will arrive in Kotor, where you will spend the next four nights.

Day 2 Hike around Mount Vrmac – 16 km

Mount Vrmac stands as a barrier between the innermost part of the bay, the Bay of Kotor, and the outer part, the Bay of Tivat. The hike starts in Kotor, up to the mighty Vrmac Fortress – built in 1892 and still today almost completely intact. From here you follow the mountainside up to the highest peak of Vrmac, Sveti Ilija (765 m). The way down is an old shepherd’s path that takes you to the village of Donji Stoliv, where you can finally enjoy a cup of coffee or something refreshing at the seafront. The evening ends in Kotor.
16 km

Day 3 Hike around Perast & Orahovac – 14 km

Another mountain hike, this time on the northern side of the bay. The day starts with a short transfer to the village of Orahovac, where the hike starts, and then follows the trail through the forest to the abandoned village of Stepen. From here you hike uphill to the ruins of the Vranovo Brdo fortress, where you will be rewarded with an amazing view. The trail then continues downhill to the small town of Perast. From here you have the opportunity to take a boat trip and visit the island with the famous church of Gospa od Skrpjela (Our Lady of the Rock). The evening and night are again spent in Kotor.
14 km

Day 4 Hike along ‘Kotorladder’ - 11 km

Just outside Kotor is an old trade route that once connected Cetinje with Kotor. This trail takes you sick-sack all the way up to the Krstac pass, where you have a great view of the bay. After another 2 km, you will arrive at Njegusi, famous for its ham and cheese. From Niegusi you can then take a transfer back to Lovcen or, depending on your day, continue to the famous mausoleum of Petar Njegus II before getting a transfer to Lovcen.
11 km

Day 5 Hike in Lovcen National Park - 13.5 km

A transfer takes you to the heart of Lovcen National Park. From here, a very nice hiking trail leads you to the royal capital of Cetinje, along ancient settlements and with great views. We recommend a city walk in Cetinje to learn more about the history of Montenegro. After the day’s hike, a transfer is included from the national park to Sveti Stefan, where you will also spend the night.
13,5 km

Day 6 Budva panorama tour - 15 km

A transfer takes you to our starting point above Budva. There, a lovely panoramic hike along the Budva coast begins. After a much-needed stop at the church of Ogradnica, you start the hike downhill with stunning views of the sea and islands. From here you can choose whether you want a transfer or hike back to Sveti Stefan.
15 km

Day 7 Hike in Lake Skadar National Park - 4.7 km

Your trip ends with a hike in the Skadar Lake National Park. A transfer will take you from Budva to the village of Rijeka Crnojevica, on the shores of Lake Skadar. There, a boat trip awaits you to explore the park’s birdlife. Back on land, the trail takes you past an old hydroelectric power station, the ruins of a mill and up to a 60-metre-long, 10-metre-high cave, well worth exploring. The way back crosses the river and takes you down to the oldest parts of the village. On the outskirts you will also find a historic stone bridge that you cross to get into the centre. Here we recommend you try one of Skadar Lake’s fish specialities before a short transfer takes you back to Sveti Stefan.
4.7 km.
