Itinerary

Day 1 Arrival

Arrival in the capital of the Basque Country. Enjoy the city and prepare for a wonderful cycling trip. Today you will also receive your rental bike if you have chosen that option.

Day 2 Vitoria - Maestu - 31 km/ 78 km

We start cycling at a gentle pace along the old railway line, the Basque Navarro Greenway, leaving Vitoria behind. If you choose the longer route, you’ll experience cycling close to the water in the Basque Country’s largest wetland area. If you opt for the shorter route instead, the tour goes straight into the forests.

It’s a very pleasant stretch where you gradually enter the region’s characteristic woodlands and small villages.

After that, a lovely downhill section follows over the Guereñu Pass. After a few kilometers and a tunnel, you reach the village of Maestu.

31/78 km, +400/+700 m

Day 3 Maestu - Estella/ Ayegui - 45 km

After breakfast, and shortly after you start cycling, you leave Álava and enter Navarre. Here you follow the trail all the way to the end of the old Vasconavarro Railway Greenway in Estella.

45 km, +150 m

Day 4 Estella/ Ayegui - Pamplona - 60 km

After breakfast, you leave the Vía Verde del Vasco Navarro behind and continue your cycling tour along EuroVelo 1, which follows the French Camino de Santiago – but in the opposite direction.

The landscape changes completely, and after a beautiful and varied stage, you reach Pamplona. A visit to the city’s charming and historic center is highly recommended.

60 km, +700 m

Day 5 Pamplona - Lekunberri - 40 km

You cycle out of Navarre’s capital, with Mount San Cristóbal as a majestic backdrop. Soon you reach the beginning of the Plazaola Greenway, where you follow the trail for the first few kilometers along a gentle climb to the old railway station in Lekunberri.

40 km, +450 m

Day 6 Lekunberri - San Sebastián - 65 km

Time for the trip’s final day of cycling! As soon as you start pedaling and leave the old station behind, a magnificent landscape opens up. Green slopes, forests, and valleys accompany you all the way to the end of the Greenway.

You will pass through more than 40 tunnels, so make sure to dress warmly. At the closed tunnels, you will need to take the marked detours on foot – but the experience is well worth the effort.

When you reach Andoain, you continue along country roads and cycle paths towards the capital of Guipúzcoa. And there, at the beaches of San Sebastián, you finally meet the sea.

65 km, +150 m
