Coast & Castles

History in the making from Newcastle to Edinburgh

A classic cycle ride from Newcastle to Edinburgh, following the National Cycle Network, route 1.
A must for cycling holidays where the roads take you through stunning scenery and historic sites. You start in Newcastle where you spend your first day. The following day, the journey starts towards Edinburgh, along the River Tyne to the coast at Tynemouth. The journey continues along the dramatic Northumberland coastline with long sandy beaches and spectacular castles. It’s an exciting coastline that completely changes appearance with the tides. You’ll pedal on to Holy Island, also known as Lindisfarne, before heading towards the Scottish border at Berwick-upon-Tweed. From here, cycle inland to the Tweed Valley and Melrose, famous for its Gothic abbey. The final section of this cycle ride takes you through the Moorfoot Hills, before heading to the final destination of the trip: Edinburgh.
We classify the trip as difficulty level 2-3 on a 5 degree scale.
During the week you will cycle on mostly small country roads with only light traffic, cycle paths and some bridleways. There will also be a few stretches on paths over grass fields, tractor roads/tracks and gravel roads. However, none of these routes are technically difficult.
When cycling in the UK, be prepared for mixed weather. On any given day, the weather can vary between hot and cool, sunny and rainy. But hopefully bright sunshine ; – )

Itinerary

Day 1 Arrival in Newcastle

Newcastle is the starting point for this fantastic trip, a city that is easy to reach by train, plane or bus. If you’re travelling by car, you can park your car at your first hotel, for the duration of your trip. Newcastle is an exciting city, so make sure you have time to explore the city before setting off on your bike.

Day 2 Cycling from Newcastle to Warkworth - 76 km

The first leg of the journey starts along the Newcastle Quay, over the Millennium Bridge and eastwards along the River Tyne to the coast. At Wallsend, the end of Hadrian’s Wall, keep your eyes peeled for the Segedunum Roman Fort Museum. Continuing along the river, you’ll reach North Shields’ bustling little harbour. Not far away, Tynemouth is a perfect place to take a break. Later, you’ll leave the towns behind and cycle through the open countryside on quiet country lanes. You’ll pass Druridge Bay with its seven miles of sandy beach, nature reserves and some of Northumberland’s largest sand dunes. The final destination of the day is Warkworth, with its impressive 13th century castle.

Day 3 Cycling from Warkworth to Bamburgh – 43 km

The first stop on today’s cycle tour is the pretty village of Alnmouth: a perfect place for a revitalising cup of tea. You’ll then continue towards the impressive medieval castles of Dunstanburgh and Bamburgh. Here you can visit the museum of Grace Darling, a legend after she saved the shipwrecked. The night is spent in Bamburgh.

Day 4 Cycling from Bamburgh to Berwick-upon-Tweed – 40 km

The journey continues along the coast and takes you from Bamburgh towards Lindisfarne, also known as Holy Island. Lindisfarne was an important site during early Christianity. If the tide allows and time permits, it is recommended to visit the island by taking the footbridge, which is only available at low tide. From Holy Island you will make your way to the border town of Berwick-upon-Tweed. This town has a rich history from all the years of border wars that have gone on in the area. This is also the stop for the night.

Day 5 Cycling from Berwick-upon-Tweed to Kelso – 48 km

Today you’ll leave Berwick-upon-Tweed to head for Kelso. You’ll cross the border into Scotland and then make your way back to England, across the famous Union Suspension Bridge over the River Tweed. You’ll pass Chaninbridge Honey Farm, where you can stop to enjoy a cup of tea and some tasty pastries and buy some honey. Cycling on, you’ll head back across the Scottish border towards Norham Castle and on to Kelso, with its impressive castle. In Kelso you will spend the rest of the evening and night.

Day 6 Cycling from Kelso to Innerleithen – 52 km

Today the journey heads towards Melrose, famous for its Gothic abbeys, and considered the burial place of Robert the First’s heart. Leaving Melrose, you continue along the Tweed Valley, surrounded by wooded hills. You cycle along the river towards the village of Innerleithen. On your way to Innerleithen, you’ll pass Traquair House, considered the oldest inhabited house in Scotland. Once in the bustling little village of Innerleithen, try a mountain bike ride, something the village is famous for. There is much to discover here! You will also spend the night in this cosy little village.

Day 7 Cycling from Innerleithen to Edinburgh – 61 km

Today’s ride starts in the north and climbs up towards and over the Moorfoot Hills, which offer stunning views of Edinburgh in the distance. As you begin your descent, you’ll pass through Dalkeith and Musselburgh before making your way back to Edinburgh, through the Innocent Tunnel and past Arthur’s Seat, finally reaching your final destination of the Vall. Here you will be met by our local representatives to take you back to Newcastle. Newcastle is the last overnight stop of the trip.
If you would prefer to stay in Edinburgh on the last night, this is possible. Price depending on hotel availability.
