Hike in the wine region of Provence

Hike in Provence among beautiful vineyards

Welcome to Provence! Embark on a delightful hike through Provence’s famous vineyards. Starting in Avignon, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and ending in the medieval town of Vaison la Romaine, where you can hike up to the Mont Ventoux. You’ll also visit Chateauneuf du Pape, southern France’s most prestigious wine village, where grapes have been grown for 850 years. The Popes brought the vines to this area in the 14th century and, thanks to the marvellous growing conditions, many world-famous and esteemed vintages have been produced. The best way to discover these vineyards is on foot.

You’ll wander between the vines from one farm to the next, which have been run by the same families for generations. You’ll pass through Séguret and Gigondas, two medieval villages perched high above the Rhône valley, framed by endless seas of famous vineyards. From Gigondas, you’ll hike on to the Dentelles de Montmirail, the small limestone mountain range that rises high and defiant above the Rhône Valley. You then continue towards the foot of Mont Ventoux, through orchards and vineyards, with extraordinary panoramic views and a great variety of landscapes.
At 1912 metres, Mont Ventoux is the highest peak in Provence. Its remarkable silhouette paints the backdrop to this scenic part of Provence.

Itinerary

Day 1 Arrival in Avignon

Welcome to Avignon! A beautiful medieval city with small cobbled streets, its famous Papal Palace and the St Benezet bridge.
At 16:30, your transfer will take you to Chateauneuf du Pape, where you will spend the rest of the evening and night.

Day 2 Hike around Châteauneuf du Pape - 7 km

Today you’ll explore Châteauneuf du Pape and its famous vineyards. Châteauneuf du Pape was chosen as the summer residence of the Popes of Avignon, complete with a castle built on top of a hill, today just a set of ruins from which the view stretches far into the horizon. It was the popes who planted the vinegroves here in
14th century and has then produces famous wines for centuries.
Today, you’ll embark on a stunning tour within the heart of the Châteauneuf appellation, hiking along farm tracks between the Vaudieu, Nalys and Solitude vineyards, all centuries old and all happy to share their savoir faire with you during a wine tasting. The red wines are deep and strongly spiced, while the whites have notes of almonds, spices and honeysuckle. In the afternoon, you’ll have free time to either visit the castle ruins or embark on a 3-hour wine tour with a local wine expert (Can be booked as an option).

Day 3 Hike around Châteauneuf du Pape - 11 km

Today you’ll hike through the vines, along paths filled with red rocks deposited here 15 thousand years ago, at the end of the last ice age. They absorb heat during the day and release it at night, keeping a constant warmth in the vineyards and helping to produce powerful and spicy red wines. We also recommend passing the famous Château Mont Redon estate. Also today, you have the afternoon free in the beautiful village of Chateauneuf du Pape. Wander from one wine shop to the next all the way to the chateau or enjoy a half-day wine tour! In the afternoon, you’ll be transferred to Séguret, where you’ll spend the rest of the evening and night.
11 km, + 150 m, – 150 m

Day 4 Hike from Séguret to Vacqueyras - 17 km

From Séguret, hike along quiet agricultural roads across the Rhone Valley to Gigondas, world-famous for its fine red wine. From Gigondas, the hike continues up to get a closer view of the spectacular Dentelles de Montmirail, a really beautiful and good area for walking and hiking.
Finally, you’ll hike down to Vacqueyras, which is also famous for its wine.
17 km, + 350 m, – 450 m

Day 5 Hike from Vacqueyras to Le Barroux - 15 km

Today, the hike continues through wild hillsides to the ruins of a church, next to ancient cave dwellings. From there, you will descend to Beaumes de Venise, where you can enjoy a glass of Muscat. Then you’ll continue to Le Barroux, a small village on a hill crowned by a 12th century castle.
The evening and night are spent in Le Barroux, dinner included.
15 km, + 420 m, – 250 m

Day 6 Hike from Le Barroux to Malaucène - 13 km (17 km)

Today you will approach Mont Ventoux, with its gigantic silhouette as a backdrop for your hike. Through shady paths of pine and cedar trees, you’ll reach the Piaut Chapel, where locals climbed up in times of drought to pray for rain. From here, hike down the pilgrimage trail to Malaucène.
Alternative route: This hike takes you into the heart of Mont Ventoux, through its densely forested northern slopes, far from the well-trodden tourist routes. Along a forest road, 400 metres above the village, you have views far into the Barronies mountains to the north, before reaching a chapel on a plateau (excellent picnic spot). The hike continues down to the small villages of the plains and then back to Malaucène via quiet country roads, filled with truffle oak plantations and orchards of all kinds.
13 km (17 km), + 500 m (+ 400 m), – 500 m (-400 m)

Day 7 Hike from Malaucène to Vaison la Romaine - 18 km

From Malaucène, hike north on thyme- and rosemary-soaked hills to the high, authentic village of Le Crestet. After exploring this little gem, the hike continues to the Gallo-Roman village of Vaison la Romaine.
Here we recommend you to visit the largest archaeological site in France.

Hike in Provence
Very pleasant hiking between small communities. Beautiful views. The logistics worked well with luggage transport. Relatively challenging hike with significant elevation changes on often rocky terrain. Difficulty level 3.5.
