Piedmont - Barolo to Barbaresco

Wine hiking trip from Barolo to Barbaresco

Piedmont is Italy’s paradise for the true gourmand, with divine food and great wines. Located between the Alps and the Apennines, the Langhe region is blessed with fertile lands that produce Tuber Magnatum – a prized white truffle – and some of Italy’s most prestigious red wines: Barolo and Barbera.

The walk from Barolo to Barbaresco is a real taste journey, with a spectacular array of local specialities such as truffles, gourmet cheeses, pastries and chocolates that are appreciated all over the world.

The walk is also a feast for the eyes with its magnificent scenery where you walk over rolling hills, through small picturesque villages, vineyards, hazelnut forests and past elegant castles and tower houses.

Accommodation along the way is a mix of hotels and charming, carefully selected family-run farms, known as agriturismos, many with renowned restaurants.

The length of the trip is 8 days/ 7 nights, or 5 days/ 4 nights (can also be adapted in number of travelling days as desired)

Difficulty level

The daily stages vary between about 8 and 20 km in slightly hilly terrain, about 200-800 altitude metres per day. We classify it as medium difficulty: 2-3 on a 5-point scale.

Weather conditions

Northern Italy generally has a continental climate with warm summers and cold winters. The summer months tend to be dry and warm, while spring and autumn are mild and ideal for hiking.

Barolo at Its Best
We did a fantastic hike in Barolo and the surrounding area over the Midsummer weekend. After a full day of hiking, it was wonderful to arrive at various charming Italian hotels and see our luggage waiting for us.

Wonderful combo in Piedmont
A fantastic experience in Piedmont. Wonderful hiking in rolling landscapes among vineyards and hazelnut trees. Passed picturesque 17th-century villages strategically located atop the hills. In the evenings, we enjoyed the fantastic local cuisine and the opportunity to try the wonderful wines produced in Piedmont. Who says no to a bit of hiking and then enjoying a Barolo you’ve “earned” when you arrive? Great combination and choice of hotels where our luggage was waiting.

Beautiful views and good food
Wonderfully beautiful views with hiking along vineyards and hazelnut plantations, mostly on trails and small roads. My personal favorite stretch went straight across a meadow in full bloom. Walking into a village for lunch or a hotel is something special. Good food, fine wines, friendly people, and these beautiful small communities several hundred years old… Even though we had bad weather on some days, the mood was high all the time! Nice and varied accommodation options. Highly recommended.

Spring hiking in Barolo
We are very satisfied with the setup. All logistics worked perfectly. As promised, a varied and lovely hiking trail through the rolling landscape with wonderful small villages. Good accommodations. Quite a few places were closed during the low season, but it worked out well anyway. Some preparation was required to book for a group like ours of 10 people for restaurants, etc. But we actually managed to arrange a spontaneous wine tasting at a vineyard (Cascina S’ot) before Monforte, which we can recommend. In one case, the pre-info was incorrect that the hotel’s restaurant was closed. All in all: a fantastic trip! Thank you, Gunnar!

Hiking Piedmont
Absolutely fantastic even though we hiked in the middle of the year’s heatwave with temperatures up to 35°C. Varied hiking in a wonderful landscape, good wines, and summer truffle pasta! Couldn’t be better! Well organized both in terms of logistics and accommodations, but sometimes the restaurants were closed on the day we were there (not just the hotel’s, but almost all in the village), the same could apply to shops. But it always worked out somehow :)

Go go, up and down.
Well organized. Accommodation and transfers, including baggage transport, worked very well! The hike was a bit “more challenging” (hilly) than we perhaps expected. The map notes should be updated in a few places. Beautiful and varied trails.

Hiking Piedmont
Fantastic trip that was very well organized. Both before and during the trip, everything worked very well; all the hotels were excellent and the baggage transport between them functioned perfectly. We have consistently received help when making adjustments with transfers, etc., and everything worked perfectly. The hikes themselves are magical, and with ActiveNav it’s easy to find the right paths. We had mixed weather, and we almost enjoyed it most when the sun was behind clouds; the hikes were truly challenging and the climbs were many.

Hiking in Piedmont
Wonderful days with beautiful hiking, hill up and hill down. Fun that the last grapes were being harvested while we were there. The hotels were excellent with very good service. The hike passed through many lovely small towns with good restaurants. There was a bit too much asphalt in some sections. The detour to Novello felt unnecessary, as we would rather have arrived in Barolo a little later for lunch. Bring lunch for the hike to Cissone. Visit the hazelnut factory in Sinio and have an ice cream. Visit https://www.cantinacascinabarone.it/ for a wine tasting. The ActiveNav app worked very well and was easy to follow.

Wine hiking in Piedmont
Beautiful hiking in a lovely landscape (three hiking days), great weather with 25°C and no rain. Moderately challenging, suitable for anyone with average fitness. Plenty of time to enjoy the hikes. The luggage transport worked very well. The agriturismos were particularly pleasant, especially San Ponzio, which had very friendly hosts and a fantastic breakfast. The small village’s only restaurant is also highly recommended. Balcone sur Lange (Cissone) was also good with an outstanding view, and it’s appreciated that these agriturismos have a pool. The ActiveNav app worked well, except that waypoints disappeared halfway through the longer route between Monforte and Cissone. Still, it was possible to follow your GPS position and reach the correct path. The wine museum in Barolo is recommended! Overall, this hiking trip is highly recommended.

6-day July hiking trip
Very well organized – everything worked smoothly – baggage transfers, good hotel choices, etc. Nice mix of villages and accommodations. Though a hike in July might be a bit too hot.
