Scotland - The Great Glen Way

Hike in Scotland along "The Great Glen Way"

Welcome to Scotland!

This long-distance hike, opened in April 2002, runs through the heart of Scotland. From Fort William to Inverness, you’ll experience the highlights that make this region so appealing to walkers.

The trail passes at the foot of Ben Nevis (1,344 m), the highest mountain in the United Kingdom. You’ll walk along winding forest paths by the shores of Loch Ness and through a varied landscape of farmland, open moors, and woodland on your way to the capital of the Highlands, Inverness.

Along the way, you’ll also encounter historic forts and castles that bear witness to Scotland’s dramatic past—from the Iron Age to the Jacobite uprising led by Bonnie Prince Charlie, which was finally crushed at the Battle of Culloden.

The trail is easy to moderately challenging, with daily stages ranging between 13 and 29 kilometers (about 3.5 to 8 hours of walking). The route starts out relatively flat but becomes more demanding over the final three days, with short, steep climbs and longer ascents on the last day. To make things easier, you can choose to use an included taxi transfer on the final day, which skips the steep climb and starts about one-third into the day’s stage.

Itinerary

Day 1 Arrival in Fort William

Welcome to Fort William! Set out to explore the so-called “Chamonix of Scotland,” where you’ll find plenty of shops, bookstores, and cozy little cafés. End the evening with something delicious and enjoy. Tomorrow the adventure truly begins!

Day 2 Hike from Fort William to Gairlochy – 17 km

The first hike of the week is very easy, giving you the opportunity to take several detours. The first stop is Old Inverlochy Castle, one of Scotland’s oldest stone castles, built in 1260. From here, continue on to the charming village of Corpach Sea Loch, with its locks and beautiful lighthouse. After a short break, the walk continues along the Caledonian Canal past “Neptune’s Staircase” to Gairlochy. From there, it’s only a short walk to your accommodation in Spean Bridge.

Day 3 Hike from Gairlochy to South Laggan – 21 km

Today’s hike is also relatively easy, with only a few short, steep climbs. The route follows a mix of paved roads, forest paths, and trails, most of which overlap with the Great Glen Cycle Route. Shortly after starting, you can take a detour to the Clan Cameron Museum and Cia-aig Waterfall. From there, you’ll continue all the way to South Laggan along beautiful forest paths, enjoying magical views over Loch Lochy.

Day 4 Hike from South Laggan to Fort Augustus – 21 km

Due to logging on the eastern side of Loch Oich, you will instead follow the Great Glen Way Invergarry Link from South Laggan. This marked route takes you through beautiful forests along the western side of Loch Oich, offering fantastic views of the loch until you reach Invergarry. After a short but enjoyable stay in Invergarry, you’ll hike the final stretch to Fort Augustus. This incredibly charming little village was largely built in 1729 as the hub of General Wade’s military road-building program.

Day 5 Hike from Fort Augustus to Invermoriston – 13 km

Today’s hike is a bit more challenging, with steeper climbs. You’ll start the day walking through birch and pine forests, enjoying dramatic views over Loch Ness at regular intervals. Towards the evening, you’ll reach the village of Invermoriston with its small bridge, built by Thomas Telford. Today’s accommodation, the Invermoriston Hotel, is a great place to dine and offers a variety of malt whiskies and beers. End the day with a leisurely evening stroll along one of the lovely, leafy paths by the river.

Day 6 Hike from Invermoriston to Drumnadrochit – 22 km

Today’s hike is relatively easy, with a few steep sections and some undulating terrain. Weather permitting, you have the opportunity to climb the 699-meter hill Meall Fuar-Mhonaidh, from which you’ll enjoy stunning views of Ben Nevis all the way to Inverness. You can also take a detour to Urquhart Castle, with its impressive views over Loch Ness. From there, you’ll hike the final stretch to Drumnadrochit, today’s destination.
22 km, +580 m, -602 m

Day 7 Hike from Drumnadrochit to Inverness – 21/30 km

Today’s hike is 30 km, which may be too long, especially if you want to explore some of Inverness. Therefore, the hike can be shortened with an optional taxi transfer, which takes you from the city to Loch Laide, known for its very clean water. From there, the walk continues along the Caledonian Canal to Blackford and Great Glen before reaching Inverness. This beautiful city blends history and modern life, making it the perfect end to this journey.
