Cycle in the beautiful Loire Valley - 7, 6, 5 or 4 days

This cycling holiday takes you to the beautiful Loire Valley, home to many of France’s most impressive castles. You cycle largely on marked cycle paths and smaller country roads in the lush landscape, along the mighty Loire River, through pleasant villages and vineyards.
We have three different variants of this tour. On these you have the opportunity to experience both the countryside, small villages and also the larger city of Tours, with its magnificent cathedral, museums and city life. The level of difficulty are easy to medium. The terrain is easy to cycle in, but some parts can be slightly hilly. You cycle mostly on marked cycle paths and smaller country roads with light traffic.

Itinerary

7 days/ 6 nights

Day 1 Arrival in Blois

You will arrive in the charming town of Blois and check into your hotel. Take the opportunity to stroll the narrow streets of the town and visit the castle.
If you arrive early, there is also the possibility to cycle today.

Day 2 Blois - Cheverny - Blois - 48 km (40 km)

Today’s cycle tour takes you through vineyards, fields and several pleasant villages, via Château de Troussay, the smallest castle in the Loire. Then on to Château de Cheverny, famous for its magnificently decorated apartments. The castle inspired Tintin’s creator and is the model for the fictional castle of Moulinsart (Hawkeborg) in Tintin’s adventures. In total you cycle 48 km today. If you want a slightly shorter ride, there is a variant of 40 km that goes to Château de Chambord.

Day 3 Blois - Amboise - 40 km

Today you will cycle on small roads through pleasant villages, to the castle of Chaumont, which sits majestically above the river and the community. The castle is definitely worth a visit before you cycle on to Amboise, where you can visit the royal castle where Leonardo Da Vinci’s grave is located.

Day 4 Amboise - Chenonceaux - Amboise - 45 km

You’ll start the day by cycling through the forest of Amboise, and then arrive at the famous Chenonceau Castle, beautifully situated across the Cher River. The castle is also famous for the power struggle between rivals Diane de Poitiers and Catherine de Medici. When you arrive in Amboise, you can visit Château Clos Lucé, where Leonardo da Vinci spent his last years. The castle is now a museum.

Day 5 Amboise - Tours - 26 km (32 km)

Today you will cycle through the Montlouis wine region, where you can visit some of the many vineyards producing the region’s famous sweet white and sparkling wines. Today’s cycle tour ends in the city of Tours where you can visit the old part of the city with its typical half-timbered houses.

Day 6 Tours - Villandry - Tours - 40 km

Today, follow the cycle path along the Cher River until you reach Villandry Castle and its magnificent Renaissance gardens. The gardens include a water garden, orchards and botanical gardens. You then cycle back to Tours on quiet, pleasant country roads.

Day 1 Arrival in Tours

Arrival in Tours and check-in at the hotel. Take the opportunity to visit the old part of Tours with its typical half-timbered houses, before the evening dinner.

Day 2 Tours - Azay le Rideau - 45 km

You’ll first cycle via Savonnières, known for its ‘creepy caves’. Then you continue to Villandry and its marvellous Renaissance-style gardens. The gardens include a water garden, orchards and botanical gardens. Finally, you will reach Azay-le-Rideau where you can admire its Renaissance castle, located on an island on the river Indre.

Day 3 Azay le Rideau - Chinon - 36 km

Today’s bike ride starts with a stop at Chateau Langeais. The castle is originally a medieval castle that was converted into a castle in the 1400s. It is famous for its furniture and tapestries. You then cycle on to the Château de la Belle au Bois Dormant ‘Sleeping Beauty Castle’ in Ussé, which has inspired Charles Perrault to the famous fairy tale.

Day 4 Chinon -Saumur - 36 km (48 km)

Take the opportunity to visit the medieval town of Chinon. Here you’ll find plenty of wine cellars, serving the famous red wine so favoured by Rabelais (writer, doctor, monk). Continue towards the Abbey of Fontevraud before arriving in the beautiful town of Saumur.

Day 5 Saumur - Angers - 58 km

Today’s ride first follows the Loire River before passing through the vineyards of Anjou. At the end of the day’s ride, you’ll reach the pleasant city of Angers, the final destination of your journey.

Day 1 Arrival in Chitenay

You will arrive in Chitenay, just outside Blois. You will stay for the duration of your trip in a very nice family-run Auberge with an outdoor swimming pool. During your stay, there are a number of cycling tours you can choose from, all starting and finishing in Chitenay. The tours we describe are a selection of a total of 7 available tours of 23 – 56 km per day, which you can freely choose from. You can also do two shorter tours on the same day if you wish.

Day 2 Chitenay - Sologne - Chitenay - 41 km

Today you will cycle in the heart of the Sologne area, between forest and ponds. Along today’s bike ride you can visit the vineyards of the Cheverny appellation, to taste a glass of Cheverny blanc.

Day 3 Chitenay - Chaumont-sur-Loire - Chitenay - 38 km

Today you will cycle on small country roads until you reach the banks of the Loire River and Château Chaumont, with its beautiful gardens and views of the Loire.

Day 4 Chitenay - Château Cheverny - Chitenay - 23 km (47 km)

Today’s cycle tour takes you through vineyards, fields and several pleasant villages, via Château de Troussay, the smallest castle in the Loire. Then on to Château de Cheverny, famous for its magnificently decorated apartments.
