Itinerary

7 days/ 6 nights

Day 1 Arrival in Buonconvento

You will make your way to the organic agriturismo Pieve a Salti, which will be your starting point for this cycling tour.

Day 2 Cycling around Buonconvento - 23 km (33 km or 40 km)

Today you can choose from three different tours that start and finish in Buonconvento. For example, you can take the train to Siena, visit the city and then cycle to Buonconvento. 40 km, +568 m, -570 m. Another example is cycling on narrow paths along the Crevole river to Murlo. Further along, you will cycle among steep cliffs and untouched nature with fantastic views, before you reach La Befa. A short section, about 3-400 metres, is so technical that you probably need to lead your bike. 33 km, +585 m, -675 m

Day 3 Cycling from Buonconvento to Pienza – 33,5 km

Cycle uphill until you reach the monastery of Monte Oliveto Maggiore, where you can admire the murals and visit its beautiful botanical garden. You will then cycle through small isolated villages and rows of cypress trees before reaching the monastery of Sant’ Anna, in Camprena. Shortly afterwards, Pienza is your final destination for the day. 33,5 km, +769 m, -540 m

Day 4 Cycling around Pienza and Montepulciano - 30 km

From Pienza, cycle on panoramic roads until you reach Montichiello. You will cycle on a limestone ridge with beautiful views of Val d’Orcia before starting the climb up to Montepulciano. Afterwards, you cycle downhill back to Pienza.
30 km, +867 m, -867 m

Day 5 Cycling from Pienza to San Quirico d’Orcia – 14,5 km

Today’s ride is mostly on gravel roads in the beautiful countryside of the Orcia Valley. You’ll also cycle along a riverbed to the medieval village of Bagno Vignoni, where, like the Romans, you can bathe in the healing waters. Afterwards, you will reach the village of San Quirico d’Orcia.
14.5 km, +645 m, -576 m

Day 6 Cycling from San Quirico d’Orcia to Buonconvento – 38 km

You start the day by cycling along sunflower fields until you reach the heart of the Brunello wine region. A steep tarmac road takes you up to the village of Montalcino. From here you cycle along endless olive groves and vineyards until you suddenly are back in the so-called “badlands”. A really nice final ride.
38 km, +990 m, -1181 m

Day 1 Arrival in Siena

You will arrive in pleasant Siena and check into your hotel. We recommend that you arrive as early as possible to have time to explore Siena.

Day 2 Cycling from Siena to Buonconvento – 40 km

Leaving Siena, you’ll cycle on quiet dirt roads, the so-called ‘Strade Bianche’ and paths through the spectacular and strangely shaped landscape of the Crete Senesi. After this, you will cycle part of the Via Francigena pilgrimage route, past the ancient village of Radi. Then you cycle downhill, following a path to the ecological agriturismo Pieve a Salti.
40 km, +568 m, -570 m

Day 3 Cycling from Buonconvento to Pienza – 33,5 km

Cycle uphill until you reach the monastery of Monte Oliveto Maggiore, where you can admire the murals and visit its beautiful botanical garden. You will then cycle through small isolated villages and rows of cypress trees before reaching the monastery of Sant’ Anna, in Camprena. Shortly afterwards, Pienza is your final destination for the day. 33,5 km, +769 m, -540 m

Day 4 Cycling from Pienza to San Quirico d’Orcia – 14,5 km

You’ll also cycle along a riverbed to the medieval village of Bagno Vignoni, where, like the Romans, you can bathe in the healing waters. Afterwards, you will reach the village of San Quirico d’Orcia. (If you think that today’s tour was too short, you can do another one).
