Via degli Dei – Hike the Trail of the Gods from Bologna to Florence

Welcome to Italy! This exciting journey takes us from lovely Bologna to beautiful Florence in Tuscany. During the week, we’ll hike along ancient paths through mountains and valleys rich in history and legends, surrounded by lush greenery and vibrant vineyards. Along the way, we’ll have the chance to visit several historic sites, such as the La Futa military cemetery and an old Roman road in the heart of the Apennines. Evenings are spent in small, picturesque villages, where we can relax among narrow alleys and cozy squares.

You can choose between two trip lengths: 8 days / 7 nights / 6 hiking days, or 6 days / 5 nights / 4 hiking days.

The trip is also perfect if you’d like to combine your hiking holiday with a few extra days in Bologna or Florence.

Day 1 Arrival to Bologna

Welcome to Bologna! With its medieval city center, long stone arcades, and tall towers, Bologna is the perfect first stop on our journey. Take the opportunity to stroll around the city and discover everything it has to offer, such as the famous Piazza Maggiore and the Basilica di San Petronio. End the day with a delicious meal at one of the many excellent restaurants. Tomorrow, the adventure truly begins!

Day 2 Hike from Bologna to Sasso Marconi – 20 km

Today’s hike begins at the famous square, Piazza Maggiore. As we leave the city, we pass through the Portico di San Luca. With its 666 arches and a length of 4 km, it is the longest covered walkway in the world. We continue past Parco Talon and the 800-year-old Casalecchio lock before catching sight of the small village of Sasso Marconi, where we’ll spend the evening and the night.

Day 3 Hike from Sasso Marconi to Monzuno - 17 km

We start the day with a short transfer to the Badolo area. From here, we begin the hike along sandy paths and steep cliffs up towards Monte Adone. On the way up, we stop to admire the 2–4 million-year-old rock formation Contrafforte Pliocenico. Shortly after our stop at the rock formation, we reach the mountain summit, where Monte Adone’s characteristic stone towers and breathtaking views of the landscape below await. From the top, today’s hike continues down to the small mountain village of Monzuno. The rest of the evening can be spent wandering through cozy alleys and sampling the delicious local specialties.

Day 4 Hike from Monzuno to Bruscoli - 19,5 km

During today’s hike, we will come across the ancient Roman paving “Flaminia Militare,” the road that in Roman times ran between Bologna and Arezzo. After a long and interesting day, we enter Tuscany through the beautiful Pian di Balestra area. We spend the night in the village of Bruscoli, surrounded by valleys and fertile fields.

Day 5 From Bruscoli to San Piero a Sieve - 30 km / 22 km

Today, our journey continues along small paths surrounded by stunning scenery. The first stop of the day is at a military cemetery on the mountain pass Passo della Futa, where we can learn more about the area’s German past and World War II. The hike then continues down to Sant’Agata, a typical Tuscan village. Here, we recommend visiting the museum “Museo del Leprino.” As we keep moving, the landscape around us transforms into a classic Tuscan setting, with vineyards stretching as far as the eye can see. Our accommodation for the night is in the picturesque village of San Piero a Sieve.

30 km (22 km), +740 m, -1470 m

Day 6 Hike from San Piero a Sieve to Olmo - 21 km

After leaving San Piero a Sieve, we continue towards Castello del Trebbio, a large farmhouse atop a hill offering incredible views of the Mugello Valley and Lake Bilancino. Our hike then continues through a wonderful landscape of olive groves until we reach Tagliaferro, where we visit an abandoned building called Badia di Bonsollazzo. From here, we hike to today’s final stop, Monastero di Monte Senario, a Catholic church founded by seven saints. Today’s stage ends in the small community of Olmo.

Day 7 Hike from Olmo to Florens - 12 km / 7 km

We are now almost in Florence, the end of our journey. Today, we begin by hiking through Vetta le Croci, a site where 200,000 barbarians were killed during the Battle of Montereggi. The trail then takes us up to Il Pratone before reaching the Etruscan town of Fiesole, where you can take a break and enjoy the fantastic views. After a tough but incredibly rewarding week, we arrive at our final destination, Florence. Spend the rest of the day exploring this beautiful city and enjoy!

Getting here

Plane

The nearest airport to fly into is Bologna (BLQ). From there, you can take a taxi, bus, or train to the city center.

It is also possible to fly to Florence Airport (FLR), but it takes about 2 hours to reach Bologna by bus or train.

Train

Take the train from Bologna Airport (BLQ) to the city center; the journey takes about 10 minutes. Check your trip on Trenitalia.

Train from Florence Central Station to Bologna, approximately 1 hour 20 minutes.
