Camino del Norte, or the Northern Way, is a long and beautiful hike. The trail takes you through dramatic coastal landscapes between sea and mountains, marked by historical sites and monuments.
Starting in the Basque capital Bilbao, a fascinating city and a hub for both design and cuisine, the hike continues along the Cantabrian coast and through picturesque fishing villages. The final destination, Santillana del Mar, known as “the pearl of the Camino del Norte,” is a place well worth lingering in.
Difficulty
On average 5–7 hours / 25–30 km per day over hilly terrain, though uphill and downhill sections are not particularly steep.
Weather
The climate in the area is very mild due to its proximity to the Atlantic. The average temperature is around 15°C throughout the year, and extreme fluctuations are rare. Summers are usually dry and warm, while spring and autumn are mild and excellent for hiking, though there is some risk of rain showers.
