Czech Republic - Prague to Vienna

Cycle through the Czech Republic from Prague to Vienna

During this journey, you will travel through beautiful landscapes along ancient trade routes that once connected these two important European capitals. Along the way, you’ll visit regions such as Bohemia, Moravia, and Lower Austria, and pass through unique sites listed as UNESCO World Heritage. The well-preserved and scenic Podyjí National Park offers a refreshing contrast to the many picturesque towns and villages you’ll encounter throughout the trip. Itinerary

Day 1 Arrival in Prague

After your arrival and check-in at your hotel in Prague, you can either choose to relax and prepare for the week ahead, or join a guided tour of the city. The tour is led by a local resident who will show you all the wonderful places that most tourists never find. End the evening with a delicious meal at one of the many excellent restaurants the city has to offer.

Day 2 Cycling from Prague to Benesov/Tábor - 61 km

We start the day by following the Vltava River upstream before heading toward the Posázaví Highlands. Once at the top, you’ll be rewarded with beautiful views of the surrounding landscape. You then continue toward Zbrený Kostelec, where you can take a short break to hike up to a nearby castle ruin if you wish. The route then leads you to Týnec nad Sázavou, known for its romantic Gothic fortress, and onward to today’s final destination. We recommend visiting Konopiště Castle, the summer residence of Franz Ferdinand D’Este, before taking the train from Benešov to Tábor, your destination for the day.

Day 3 Cycling from Benesov/Tábor to Jindrichuv Hradec - 52 km

Start the day with a walk along the ancient walls surrounding Tábor. These fortifications were built in harmony with the landscape and have served as a crucial defense line during several wars throughout history. Once you get on your bike, you’ll head into South Bohemia — a region of stunning scenery, lush nature, and fairytale castles such as Červená Lhota. Continue on to the charming town of Jindřichův Hradec, where you’ll spend the evening and night.

Day 4 Cycling from Jindrichuv Hradec to Telc - 45 km

Today you’ll leave South Bohemia and enter the Bohemian–Moravian region. One of the highlights of the day is the visit to the Renaissance town of Telč, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Telč is often considered one of the most beautiful Renaissance towns in Europe. Along the way, you’ll pass several ponds and lakes — perfect for a refreshing swim. Before reaching Telč, you’ll ride through the small town of Strmilov, where you’ll have the opportunity to visit an artisanal weaving workshop and learn about the process of making wool and linen fabrics.

Day 5 Cycling from Telc to Podyjí - 67 km

We start the day by cycling towards Dačice, the town where the very first sugar cube was produced. The route then continues through an area offering breathtaking views. Along the way, you’ll pass peaceful villages and a well-preserved fortification system dating back to the early days of World War II. You’ll continue past the fairytale-like castles of Písečné and Frejštejn. Before reaching today’s destination, you can make a detour to the Vranov Reservoir to enjoy a stunning view of Bítov Castle and the surrounding landscape. The day ends in the charming town of Podyjí.

Day 6 Cycling from Vranov nad Dyjí to Znojmo - 46 km

Today you will cycle through the incredibly scenic Podyjí National Park. The route takes you between the ruins of Nový Hrádek and the magnificent viewpoint overlooking the medieval Hardegg Castle. You then continue past the Sobes vineyard — a perfect spot to enjoy a glass of local wine. The day ends in the town of Znojmo, where we recommend exploring its historic old town.

Day 7 Cycling from Znojmo to Mikulov 18 (68 km)

We leave Znojmo and cycle along the river, through fields and vineyards toward the Austrian border. The route continues eastward with a stop in the town of Jaroslavice, home to a beautiful Renaissance chateau. Crossing into Austria, you’ll visit the picturesque wine-growing area of Galgenberg. From here, you’ll follow a newly built cycle path winding through the peaceful countryside to Mikulov.

TIP: Culture and wine lovers can take a morning train to Břeclav and spend the day cycling in the unique UNESCO-listed Lednice–Valtice area!

Day 8 Cycling from Mikulov to Vienna - 55 km

Today is the final cycling day in the Czech Republic. We begin by following the former Iron Curtain Trail, where you’ll learn the stories of those who once tried to escape from the communist Eastern Bloc. We also take a detour to the unique Lednice–Valtice castle complex — one of the highlights of the tour! After crossing the border, you’ll pass through the village of Herrnbaumgarten, famous for its quirky “Museum of Nonsense,” before continuing to the wine museum in Poysdorf, where you’ll have the chance to complete your Central European wine education!

We finish our cycling adventure in Poysdorf, from where a transfer will take you to Vienna, marking the end of your journey.
