Gran Canaria

Hike in classic Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria offers a unique hiking experience with sandy beaches, whitewashed villages, lush forests, tropical plantations and dry volcanic mountain ranges.
The week starts in Arucas, where you will stay in a cosy hotel surrounded by banana plantations. You will then hike by the Guayadeque gorge and Gran Canaria’s highest peak Pico de las Nieves. After this, your base for the next few days will be the village of Tejeda, in the centre of the island. On a clear day, enjoy the views over the mountains and out to Tenerife in the distance. We also recommend you to visit the village market.
The week ends with two nights in Puerto de las Nieves, where you’ll hike the Camino Real with stunning panoramic views of the valley.
During the week you will stay in genuine hotels in cosy little villages. We include luggage transport for accommodation changes, detailed maps and hiking descriptions, as well as 24h emergency phone number. Private transfers from and to the airport are also included. Itinerary

Day 1 Arrival in Gran Canaria

Welcome to Gran Canaria!
The taxi transfer that is included will take you to Arucas, located on the northern part of the island. The accommodation is a nice resort with pool, surrounded by banana plantations and located near the village of Arucas. If you arrive early, you can take the time to relax at the hotel or take a stroll around the village, which is just 1.5 km away on foot.

Day 2 Tour of the village Teror - 13.2 km

The day starts with a short taxi ride to the beginning of your hike in Las Rosadas, on the outskirts of Teror. After the Barranco Madrelagua and the ridge above Valleseco, you will reach the Doramas Natural Park and the ‘Finca de Osorio’. At the end of the route you walk down to the main square of Teror.
We really recommend you to visit the village of Teror! Make sure you agree with your taxi driver on a later pick-up time if you want to spend the afternoon here! You won’t regret it! Teror is home to the island’s patron saint La Virgen del Pino (the Virgin of the Pines, a 15th-century apparition that materialised in a treetop). Teror is also one of the oldest towns in Gran Canaria with a beautiful historic centre.

Day 3 Hike from Mirador La Degollada to Tejeda – 16,5 km (10,1 km)

Today the taxi will drop you off at the Mirador Degollada de Becerra viewpoint. After 3 km of hiking you will arrive at Llanos de la Pez, a picnic spot where you can choose to make a detour to Pico de las Nieves (the highest point on the island and well worth visiting!) or continue straight to Tejeda, where you will stay for the next three nights. Here you will stay in a welcoming and comfortable rural hotel with a long history. Dinner is again included in Tejeda, but only for the first night. For the next two days, you can choose whether to continue eating at the hotel or try different restaurants in the village.
16,5 km (10,1 km) +415m -922 (+395m -395m)

Day 4 Hike around Roque Nublo - 18,6 km (12,6 km)

Today’s hike starts directly from the hotel. After 1 km of tarmac, the hike begins on steep paths that zigzag up towards Roque Nublo. The volcanic origin of the peak is at the top and you look down hundreds of metres into steep eroded ravines. On the descent, you will follow a different path – through a peaceful spruce forest – from where you can take a bus back to Tejeda or continue on foot back to the village. If you choose to continue hiking, you will hike along the old road Camino Real.
18,6 km +875 m -800m (12,6km +800m – 400m).

Day 5 Hike from Tejeda to Via Altavista – 13,2 km (9,1 km)

After 3 long days of hiking, you will do one of the most beautiful hikes on this programme – over the Altavista ridge, on the edge of the Tamadaba Natural Park. You will hike all day in the sun, with the clouds below you and sweeping views all the way to Tenerife. The same bus that took you to the start of the hike in the morning will pick you up this afternoon in Artenara.
After the day’s hike, you’ll have time to visit the Spice Centre in Tejeda, where you can get an insight into the island’s traditional use of medicinal plants. There is a botanical garden and a laboratory, where you have the opportunity to try different spices. Tejeda also has a small ethnographic museum and a cultural centre with exhibitions. In the evening you can enjoy the sunset from the hotel’s roof terrace, with the silhouette of Bentayga Peak in the background.
13.2 km +500m -450m (9.1 km +300m -300m)

Day 6 Hike from Tejeda to Puerto de las Nieves – 13,5 km

Today you leave the hotel in Tejeda and head towards Agaete. The hike starts off with a 450 meter climb, followed by a 4 km hike to La Cruz de Tejeda. From here you will follow the ridge and with impressive views of the sea, at an altitude of 1715 metres, near Galdar. Then begins a long descent along a ridge, surrounded by pastures, barns, flocks of sheep and cheese dairies. The last part is on tarmac, but free of traffic. Finally, you’ll arrive at Fagajesto, where you can have a drink while waiting for the arrival of the transfer that will take you to Puerto de las Nieves.
Again, we have not included dinner, as there are several restaurant options in the village and a very good à la carte restaurant at the hotel. There is so much excellent seafood to choose from!
13,5 km +700m -750m

Day 7 Hike around Camino de los Rameros – 10,4 km

The day begins with a short transfer to the village of San Pedro, where you start your hike along the Camino Real to Montaña Bibique (645 m), a rocky outcrop at the top of steep cliffs with stunning views of the Agaete Valley. Here you can choose to continue to the viewpoint of Mirador Vuelta de la Paloma (850m; 2.5km up and down extra) OR continue along a narrow dirt road to the coastal town of Puerto de las Nieves.
10.4 km +740m – 930m

Hiking Gran Canaria
This is a very beautiful hike that includes a mix of nature and culture with the Guanche caves, old Spanish towns and villages, as well as beautiful landscapes with views over valleys with almond blossoms and the sea in the background. It was also good and fun to use maps together with a hiking app.

Hike on Gran Canaria
Logistics and service worked very well. Hotel staff and taxi drivers were all very service-oriented. Good accommodations. The hikes were demanding; both uphill and downhill sections were occasionally quite steep. The time estimates for the hikes were on the low side. On the first day, this caused us to miss the agreed-upon time for the taxi. Maps and hiking instructions worked well, except that the app could not connect to the mobile network in a couple of places. The woman at the hotel in Tejeda suggested taking a bus or taxi for the first 4 km to Cruz de Tejeda on the hike between Tejeda and Fajageste, very good.

Fantastic hikes in Gran Canaria
My wife and I have done quite a bit of hiking, but this was our first time going on a trip organized by EverTrek. All logistics worked perfectly. None of the drivers spoke English, but it worked well anyway with the EverTrek voucher, sign language, and Google Translate. The hotels were consistently good, though the included meals were so-so. We are 61 and 63 years old and had no major issues with the hikes. They are fairly long hikes with quite a few elevation meters each day, but the trails and paths are good. The signage can be hard to follow at times, but with the GUIBO app, you don’t miss anything. It worked fantastically well. On the first hike from Pico Oscorio to Teror, we chose to walk along the irrigation channels where that option was available. No problems at all, though it can be slippery and tricky if it rains or is wet. On the longest hike (Roque Nublo), we took a taxi for the first part out from Tejeda (you could also take a bus), which was smart as it was quite a long hike. On the last hike from San Pedro to Puerto de las Nieves, you walk on a fairly narrow trail along a mountainside with quite an open drop and some loose gravel. No real problems, but my wife experienced fear of heights halfway and had to struggle a bit to get down. We had sun for almost the entire time. Inland on the island, it was cold in the mornings and evenings (5–7°C) and around 14°C during the day. Perfect hiking temperature and comfortable in the sun with shorts and a T-shirt. On the coast (Puerto de las Nieves), it was around 21°C and warm in the sea. A wonderful trip that we can warmly recommend!
